Editorial reviews

Editors Select, June 2014 - In typical James Patterson fashion, Invisible was suspenseful, fast-paced, and filled with twists and turns. The story follows Emmy Dockery, a brash and outspoken FBI analyst who is convinced that a string of supposedly accidental deaths is actually the work of one unknown serial killer. Dismissed by both her family and the Bureau, Emmy must find the link between these closed cases before more lives are claimed. Patterson and Ellis did a spectacular job with both character development and plotline. There was never a dull moment as the story built up to its twisted and surprising climax. I couldn’t put this book down – and with January LaVoy as the female narrator, I can’t wait to revisit this story in audio. –Laura, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Everyone thinks Emmy Dockery is crazy. Obsessed with finding the link between hundreds of unsolved cases, Emmy has taken leave from her job as an FBI researcher. Now all she has are the newspaper clippings that wallpaper her bedroom, and her recurring nightmares of an all-consuming fire.

Not even Emmy's ex-boyfriend, field agent Harrison "Books" Bookman, will believe her that hundreds of kidnappings, rapes, and murders are all connected. That is, until Emmy finds a piece of evidence he can't afford to ignore. More murders are reported by the day—and they're all inexplicable. No motives, no murder weapons, no suspects. Could one person really be responsible for these unthinkable crimes?

Invisible is James Patterson's scariest, most chilling stand-alone thriller yet.

Surprise Ending

I was surprised by the ending. The story and characters kept my attention throughout the book.
Well written and I’m a big fan of January LaVoy. Narration was very good and I was introduced to a new narrator, Kevin C Collins.
Once again James Patterson and his coauthor produced an excellent work of fiction.

Best Suspense!!

I am the type that analyzes books and movies and can figure out the "killer" in the first part of the movie...... This book had me on the edge the entire time and I was not expecting the ending as it was! It was great! Kept me awake throughout my roadtrip and I appreciate that as well! I was very impressed by the way the author wrote this (This is the first Patterson book I had read, but it was not the last). I really enjoyed this book as well as the one that comes after it, Unsolved! I really like the narrators as well. Very well acted out!

So thrillless that it's oh most relaxing.

This was remarkably fine.
It wasn't thrilling, not a mystery, not really even suspense.
Not sure what this was. It kinda fell too flat on all 3 categories that I was hoping for.

I guess it was just a fine detective/police book?

Its hard to classify because it kinda gives so much away that it doesn't leave a lot to the imagination so it sorta defeats the purpose of a mystery or suspense.

You're just sorta there watching 2 characters play cat and mouse but it's too poorly paced to feel like even a typical cat and mouse book when these long stretches of time doesn't really get anywhere. I can honestly only think of maybe 1 true cat/mouse scene and the majority of this book is detective mumbo jumbo talk behind the scenes to find this killer.

Everything just sorta falls into place at the end in a very quick way like the book just can't wait to end or has trouble trying to figure out a creative way to do it. So it throws everything in your lap, creates a very questionable 'twist' and then it's done with barely any prologue. I rolled my eyes at the ending. Not sure what I expecting given how the book was so consistently bland but topping it off with a bland ending was a disappointment. It wasn't the payoff that I was toughing through this book for.

I found the way the book ended was just way too rushed feeling like. I blinked, a bunch of over the top stop is stuffed into a short amount of time and the book ends. It's the most out of control ending ever and needed an editor to handle it better or at least add more meat to it or work out the twist a bit better.

Only thing in this book that shocked me was the graphic descriptions of torture and autopsy explanations that painted some pretty gross pictures. Other then that I was so whelmed.

The only thing that kept me going on this book was how it sorta flowed in a relaxing mindless way that it didn't take a lot of energy out of me. Not exactly a good sign when looking for a thriller haha.

What’s up with Emmy?!

I tried very hard to find something to like about Emmy…. Couldn’t do it. Everything was pretty good except the main character. Immature, petulant, arrogant, whiney, and dense pretty much describes her.

Nope

Too sadistic and creepy for me. Nice premise and plot though. Narration is five star.
