In this sequel to Pulse, a genetic disease known as Brugada Syndrome kills its victims without warning, without symptom. When the president of the United States falls victim to a weaponized and contagious strain of the disease, the Chess Team - King, Queen, Rook, Knight, and Bishop - are assigned to protect Sara Fogg, a CDC detective, as she journeys to the source of the new strain: the Annamite Mountains in Vietnam.
Surrounded by Vietnam War-era landmines, harsh terrain, and more than one military force not happy about the return of American boots to the Ho Chi Minh trail, the fight for survival becomes a grueling battle in the humid jungle.
Pursued by VPLA Death Volunteers, Vietnam's Special Forces unit, the teams flight through a maze of archaic ruins reveals an ancient secret...a primal secret that may stop the disease from sweeping the globe, even as it threatens both the mission and their lives.

"Intense and full of riveting plot twists, it is Robinson’s best book yet, and it should secure a place for the Chess Team on the A-list of thriller fans who like the over-the-top style of James Rollins and Matthew Reilly.” (Booklist)
"If you like thrillers original, unpredictable, and chock-full of action, you are going to love Jeremy Robinson's Chess Team. Instinct riveted me to my chair." (Stephen Coonts)
Really enjoy listening to these books sure am glad I was introduced to Audible. Best dollar I've ever spent.
good book well written and the characters keep you interested the narrater did a great job and I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys these types of fiction and how did that happen kind of book.
I could not make it past the third chapter. The narrator drops his pitch at the end of every sentence giving his narration the quality of a bad news anchor. His narration was grating; impossible to bear. The artificiality of his inflection robbed every sentence of meaning. I'm giving this a 2, instead of 1, because the story and writing are good. But, I've moved on to the print version.
Jeffrey Kafer's narration really brought an already amazing story to life
The action is fast-paced, with great dialogue between characters
Rook!!! I loved hearing Rook come to life
Although this isn't the 1st book containing the Chess Team, it is the first one I've read. I wanted to read it after reading the Call sign: King series. I am glad I did as the whole team together are fantastic. Often having more than one or two main 'heroes' makes a story difficult to follow, that isn't the case with the Chess Team. Setting out to cure the world of a deadly virus, enemies coming from all sides, it's an action-packed thrill of a ride. I couldn't put it down. Jeffery Kafer does such a marvellous job with this book, you never wonder which character is speaking, he makes it obvious with the inflections of his voice. I think this is one of his best.
I am a registered nurse and a father of four great kids. I live in a rural part of Oregon and love it. I enjoy books, but Sci-Fi Fantasy has allows been the ones I reach for more than others.
I have enjoyed not only the book but all of the "Chess Team" novels. I would recommend this and the other books to anyone who like Special Force/Super Solider and/or Science Fiction books. This book blends the Super Soldier and the Sciencie Science Fiction genres to create a well developed story and characters.
King-He is the lead and is trying to deal with family issues on top of heading up an elite super soldier force all at the same time. He is Rambo and Bill Cosby's love child.
Kafer brought an easy listening style to a rapid action sequenced and multi-arena story lined book. He had to make each character as well as each storyline separate and distinguishable at the same time since at some parts of the book all the story lines and characters were happening/talking over each other.
As with all the Jeremy Robinson books I've listened to it is a great book.
Jeffrey Kafer is the best narrator I've heard - he does the characters beautifully and keeps you engaged through the entire book!
The toughest special ops team come up against an impossible enemy - the inanimate!
The entire Chess-Team adventures are a great series. What it lacks in believability (sometimes a little far fetched) it makes up for in great edge of the seat story telling and brilliant narration. Thoroughly recommend all of them.
