Publisher's summary

#1 WORLDWIDE BESTSELLER • Harvard professor of symbology Robert Langdon awakens in an Italian hospital, disoriented and with no recollection of the past thirty-six hours, including the origin of the macabre object hidden in his belongings.

“One hell of a good read.... As close as a book can come to a summertime cinematic blockbuster.” —
USA Today

“A diverting thriller.” —
Entertainment Weekly

With a relentless female assassin trailing them through Florence, he and his resourceful doctor, Sienna Brooks, are forced to flee.

Embarking on a harrowing journey, they must unravel a series of codes, which are the work of a brilliant scientist whose obsession with the end of the world is matched only by his passion for one of the most influential masterpieces ever written, Dante Alighieri's The Inferno.

Dan Brown has raised the bar yet again, combining classical Italian art, history, and literature with cutting-edge science in this captivating thriller.

A bit tiresome but enjoyable

Lots of fun stuff but this book just kept repeating itself with a silly formula (spoiler):

- Look of terror
- History lesson
- Amnesia clears just enough to reveal a pertinent clue
- On the run, narrowly escape
REPEAT ad nauseam

I just could not put it down

Would you consider the audio edition of Inferno to be better than the print version?

Spent the entire weekend listening to this book (almost non-stop). Driving, shopping, cleaning up at home... You can't do that with a print version.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did, and almost happened... 17 hr book and 35 hrs over the weekend

Any additional comments?

I had the fortune of visiting these places in Europe in the past two years so it felt so very real. I do really hope they make the movie. Of course I imagined Tom Hanks playing Robert Langdon. Paul Michael sounded just like him in my head..
Please Ron Howard, make it into a movie, it would make an mazing trilogy

Another thrilling ride through Renaissance Italy

Dan Brown (via his main character Robert Langdon) again returns to Italy, the previous setting of Angels and Demons, this time with a mad plot centered on the themes of Dante's Inferno. An interesting twist on the story, is that the main villain kills himself in the first scene of the book, but has set in motion of series of horrifying events that conjure up a feeling of unspeakable dread and inevitability.

Starting with the somewhat hackneyed premise of the amnesiac waking up in a hospital, and not remembering where is he or what he's done, the story soon picks up the pace and basically doesn't letup until the end.

A few interesting plot twists along the way turns some of our initial conclusions and beliefs on their heads, and Dan Browns familiar obsession with symbology, art, conspiracy and secrecy, all make their welcome return. Unfortunately, so does his moralizing on the latest issue of the day, overpopulation of the planet, and justification of ecoterrorism. At least he has the decency to present both sides of the issue and let us derive our own conclusions rather than bashing us over the heads with his own viewpoint - though the story I think, ends with his own viewpoint reigning supreme.

At least the "terrorists" are not the stereotypical arab or Muslim villains.

Definitely a worthwhile purchase if you are a Dan Brown / Robert Langdon fan.

Summertime Bubblegum...chewable

Dan Brown novels are not high literary masterpieces, nor do I think that's why anyone reads them.

If you are looking for mild escapism peddling through a predictable (sorry) story that pretty much follows the same Dan Brown outline of his previous Robert Langdon novels, then you'll enjoy it, much like rediscovering a pair of lost, but comfortable shoes after a couple months.

The narration was so-so ... I've heard better and I've heard worse ... and some of his vocal characterizations, made only worse by very wooden language on the part of Mr. Brown, would make me cringe, but after awhile, you get over it.

I think my biggest pet peeve of this book is the dialogue. Stilted, wooden, I'm actually surprised as to how poor it was, or how lazy Mr. Brown was in its construction. It really turns the characters into archetypes -- perhaps they're real people, but all that gets through is the veneer of any of them.

BUT...it's a summer listen, and like I did, if you're in need of something while walking a stretch of beach, this will do, and it won't tax your mind greatly,

Fantastic!

If you could sum up Inferno in three words, what would they be?

Dante, Amazing, Unexpected

What did you like best about this story?

I like how he blended fiction and fact, bringing awareness to issues that can't be ignored. The twists just kept coming and I enjoyed every word of the book.

Which character – as performed by Paul Michael – was your favorite?

Provost

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The part where he talked about the direction our out of control spike in population is taking us. It was eye opening realizing we are a one way trip to doom if we don't figure out something soon.
