"Recommend Elvis and Joe to anyone who likes Spenser and Hawk or Dave Robicheaux and Clete Purcell." (Booklist)
"David Stuart demonstrates considerable skill at fashioning character voices that are evocative but not overdone. He succeeds in capturing both Cole's easygoing nature and the tension of action scenes." (AudioFile)
Yes... nice listen... amusing and intriguing
...always has a twist
Great - easy to understand - amazing "Personality"
-read too many to remember just one moment
David Stuart absolutely does not work as Elvis Cole. I picture him as a 20 year old accountant fresh out of college weighing about 140 with Thick glasses. His russian accents are cartoonish, sounds like Boris from Rocky and Bullwinkle. I rarely stop listening to even the worst of books always hoping that it will get better but I don't think I am going to make it with this one.
I usually listen to books that are fifteen hours or more. I enjoy the Elvis Cole books so I 8 hours is ok. It is not a great book but it is entertaining and I listed to it in only two days which is pretty fast for me.
Joe Pike. He is a man of few words.
The performance was good but anyone who can't pronounce Sepulveda or La Cienega hasn't been around L.A. He pronounced it Sepul Veda it is Sa pal va da. Any way it gave me a good laugh.
A few times the scenes with children and their father made me emotional.
I hope he keeps writing more Elvis Cole novels. Reminds me of potato chips: not great food but I can't leave them alone.
Bottom...only because of the Narrator. He sounds like a 14 year old kid. And can so not do female voices. I have been hocked on Robert Crais for a since I read LA Requiem. I started at Book 8 and listened forward. Now I am going backward. I so wish the same narrator would read throughout the series but I understand that is not always possible but changing every 2 books is a little extreme to me but I got use to them. However, not this one. Although he reads well and is easy to understand I can not for the life of me see that voice belonging to Elvis Cole or Joe Pike!!! I see he also was the narrator in Book 6 and this is going to be tough to get thru this one so not sure I will buy Book 6 via Audio. I would have given this book 5 stars if not for the narrator. I was excited about listening to this book thinking it would be kinda funny with Joe interacting with kids but sadly I am not sure I can listen to the remainder.
Elvis and Joe as always
I'm not even sure I can get thru the first couple chapters.
I love the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books but the narrator on this one ruined the entire book for me. What kind of narrator pronounces word incorrectly??? I was going to let one mispronunciation go but when it kept happening with different words, it was too much. I couldn't even concentrate on the story. Honestly I don't understand why you would have multiple narrators for the same characters and story lines, it ruins the experience. Save yourself the agony read this book and avoid the audible version, its awful.
This was my 8th Elvis Cole book on Audible. Obviously I really enjoy the series.
After nearly 250 Audible books, this is the first listen that has prompted me to write a review.
While the narrator does a good job with most characters, his voice is so wrong for Elvis that he distracts and ruins an otherwise good story. He would be better suited for the first person voice of Peter Pan than the quirky but tough Elvis Cole.
I love all of R Crais novels, and this one is no exception. My husband and I (and our son) particularly love the way David Stuart reads them. I'm actually going to "search" in Audible for more novels narrated by David Stuart- we like him that much :) .
