Publisher's summary

Life in the California sun suits Elvis Cole - until the day a fifteen-year-old girl and her two younger siblings walk into his office. Then everything changes.

Three years ago, a Seattle family ran for their lives in a hail of bullets. Hired by three kids to find their missing father, Elvis now must pick up the cold pieces of a drama that began that night. What he finds is a sordid tale of high crimes and illicit drugs. As clues to a man's secret life emerge from the shadows, Elvis knows he's not just up against ruthless mobsters and some very angry Feds. He's facing a storm of desperation and conspiracy - bearing down on three children whose only crime was their survival...

Critic reviews

"Recommend Elvis and Joe to anyone who likes Spenser and Hawk or Dave Robicheaux and Clete Purcell."--Booklist

"David Stuart demonstrates considerable skill at fashioning character voices that are evocative but not overdone. He succeeds in capturing both Cole's easygoing nature and the tension of action scenes."--AudioFile

Worst listen of my life

I love the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books but the narrator on this one ruined the entire book for me. What kind of narrator pronounces word incorrectly??? I was going to let one mispronunciation go but when it kept happening with different words, it was too much. I couldn't even concentrate on the story. Honestly I don't understand why you would have multiple narrators for the same characters and story lines, it ruins the experience. Save yourself the agony read this book and avoid the audible version, its awful.

Horrible narration

David Stuart absolutely does not work as Elvis Cole. I picture him as a 20 year old accountant fresh out of college weighing about 140 with Thick glasses. His russian accents are cartoonish, sounds like Boris from Rocky and Bullwinkle. I rarely stop listening to even the worst of books always hoping that it will get better but I don't think I am going to make it with this one.

Mispronouncements annoying

This is a pretty good book, but got off to a bad start with me (Ch 3) because of reader mispronouncements. If you're reading a book set in LA, you need to know how to pronounce location names. Sepulveda and La Cienega are the glaring examples. Why didn't production staff pick up these errors? They're so distracting!

OMG....Wish We Had More Than 1 Narrator to choose!

Where does Indigo Slam rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Bottom...only because of the Narrator. He sounds like a 14 year old kid. And can so not do female voices. I have been hocked on Robert Crais for a since I read LA Requiem. I started at Book 8 and listened forward. Now I am going backward. I so wish the same narrator would read throughout the series but I understand that is not always possible but changing every 2 books is a little extreme to me but I got use to them. However, not this one. Although he reads well and is easy to understand I can not for the life of me see that voice belonging to Elvis Cole or Joe Pike!!! I see he also was the narrator in Book 6 and this is going to be tough to get thru this one so not sure I will buy Book 6 via Audio. I would have given this book 5 stars if not for the narrator. I was excited about listening to this book thinking it would be kinda funny with Joe interacting with kids but sadly I am not sure I can listen to the remainder.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Elvis and Joe as always

How could the performance have been better?

Different Narrator

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I'm not even sure I can get thru the first couple chapters.

Wrong voice for Elvis

This was my 8th Elvis Cole book on Audible. Obviously I really enjoy the series.

After nearly 250 Audible books, this is the first listen that has prompted me to write a review.

While the narrator does a good job with most characters, his voice is so wrong for Elvis that he distracts and ruins an otherwise good story. He would be better suited for the first person voice of Peter Pan than the quirky but tough Elvis Cole.

I have all the Elvis Cole books

Robert Crais is a genius mystery writer. if you don't like these books then you don't have good taste. You don't have to listen to them in order to understand the characters (which you will fall in love with I promise you ) but it does give you better insight to listen in order. but they're also great stand alone works. Crais makes the people in these stories seem real and there is always a twist at the end. the books aren't over sexed or have to much violence and they aren't bland or run out to long to make you loose interest. there is some foul language but that's something that can be over looked and I personally think it adds realism to the stories anyhow. I'm running out of room for praise however so I'll cut it off there

The Case of the Courageous Kids

Cole helps three kids find their dad, Clark Hewitt /Haines. He is in danger — and up to no good — and it wasn’t hard to guess what kind of trouble, precisely. But his motivation did come as a surprise, towards the end. The Vietnamese guys were hilarious. And even heartwarming. I enjoyed Joe Pike’s interactions with the kids. Young mouthy Charles was also hilarious, with his cussing insults in every cough. Cole is in love with a divorcée from New Orleans. I expect her possessive ex-husband will cause trouble in a sequel.

I’d give this another star but I was annoyed at Elvis. Oblivious much?? It was obvious that a certain person could not be trusted. Or at least should be viewed with caution. Why didn’t Cole see it,you ask? Cuz plot must go on....

Good solid narration.

Ps. I do wish the author would lighten up on the religious expletives. Like — 50 times?

A typical Crais story

This was a fine Cole/Pike story, rendered very well. My only criticism is that the ending was fairly predictable. There had to be an inside source who would identify himself at the very end.
