A Catholic cop tracks an IRA master bomber amidst the sectarian violence of the conflict in Northern Ireland

It's the early 1980s in Belfast. Sean Duffy, a conflicted Catholic cop in the Protestant RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary), is recruited by MI5 to hunt down Dermot McCann, an IRA master bomber who has made a daring escape from the notorious Maze prison. In the course of his investigations Sean discovers a woman who may hold the key to Dermot's whereabouts; she herself wants justice for her daughter who died in mysterious circumstances in a pub locked from the inside. Sean knows that if he can crack the "locked-room mystery", the bigger mystery of Dermot's whereabouts might be revealed to him as a reward. Meanwhile the clock is ticking down to the Conservative Party conference in Brighton in 1984, where Mrs. Thatcher is due to give a keynote speech.

Good story, great narrator

Gerard Doyle is perfect for this type of rather dark Irish series. It does a great job describing the turmoil of the time without sugar coating or creating false heros.
If you enjoy it, as I did, consider the books by Stuart Neville as well, set in a similar setting and read by the same narrator.

Triumph of Writing, Acting, Character and Plot

Audible has captured a great character (Detective Sean Duffy), a great author (Adrian McKinty) and an incredible narrator (Gerard Doyle) to make this book and this series (The Troubles) a most absorbing Audible experience. Doyle's unique brogue and subtle inflection bring McKinty's anti-hero and the Northern Irish setting to vivid life in a way that would be lost by merely reading. Each time I start a new book it's like starting a new romance with three artists! We get to know Detective Sean Duffy as a vulnerable, real, courageous dude. I just love these Audibles.

Best of the series so far

Includes a locked room mystery, which I didn't expect! Narrator is excellent. My favorite in the series so far.

Engaging and Excellent

As always, both the intertwining mysteries and character development, and the narrator, are engaging and excellent.

Best one yet!

I am an Adrian McKinty fan, especially the Sean Duffy series. I liked this one the best. It's a great "locked room" murder mystery, beautiful writing, enough twists and turns in the story to keep you guessing and the narrator is just great.

Great story fun to listen too

The main character is very relatable and the person reading the story was good. There were twists and turns to keep the story interesting

Wish McKinty had written a sextet.

This is a great story surrounding a true event in N. Ireland 1980s. Our detective has a self deprecating sense of humor and his detection doesn't always turn out as it should.Like other detectives before him (Dalgliesh, and Rebus to name 2, uses music and literary references to punctuate and color the dialogue. Evocative scenes of Ireland, cars clothing,Ulster fry up ( yes please!) and a Pint of Bass from Burton on Trent in the prose . Doyle is a master at hitting exactly the right tone, speech pattern and accent of the many characters. He does the several women's voices very well-. I refuse to describe plot because I hate it when other reviewers do. If you liked the first 2 you will really like this one. I have all three now and can see myself listening to them again next summer.

Can't get enough of McKinty

Any additional comments?

One of they very best of the Celtic Noir authors, McKinty's books are smart, multi-layered, character driven and full of a rich sense of time, place and the urgency of the tragic era of The Troubles. Our flawed hero walks a tightrope between the two sides (sometimes several sides) of an intractable conflict every moment of his life, attempting to balance his moral standards with the practical needs of survival. Never, never disappointed in an Adrian McKinty novel, and I find it worthwhile to re-read them. This is no exception. Write faster please Adrian - more more more!

loved it

This is a great conclusion to this 3 book series. I downloaded, called out sick at work, and finished it within 24 hours. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it. Aside from the writing and pace being highly-skilled, the narration is truly what makes this a gem.
