What the Critics Say

"It's always a treat to read a Nero Wolfe mystery. The man has entered our folklore." (The New York Times)
"What's not to like about a Nero Wolfe mystery? The mysteries are short, cleverly plotted, well paced, and, if you're an audiobook listener, wonderfully read by Michael Prichard....Prichard has read nearly 20 books in Stout's series and has mastered Wolfe's deep, meditative voice and Archie's spry, chipper voice, as well as those of a host of other characters we recognize from one recording to the next." "My least favorite Nero Wolfe"

This story follows a powerful criminal character introduced in And Be a Villain leading to a somewhat anticlimactic showdown with Nero Wolfe. I really like almost every Nero Wolfe novel, and even the ones I don’t particularly like, I don’t dislike them. This is the one I really did not like. I found the powerful criminal and conflict too derivative of Holmes and Moriarty. I don’t want to spoil any of the surprising bits for anyone, but I did not find them interesting or compelling. This is the only book of the series I actually wish I had not read, as the off characterizations here very subtly degraded my relationships with the series characters. I very highly recommend the series, but I would skip this and even And Be a Villain if I had it to do over again.

    "Excellent nail biter"

I was really worried about my heroes but as usual, good triumphed over evil. This might be one of Reed's best woven plots!

"This book took me on a Ride!"

This book was one of the best I have read of Nero Wolfe. I strongly suggest you read several of the Nero Wolfe collection before touching this one for it will have a better effect on you.
I was on the edge of my seat on several occasions and immersed in the story 100% of the time. This was one of the finest!

    "Ultimately Satisfying"

This seemed a bit of a slow starter, as Rex Stout stories go, but eventually got going and proved ultimately satisfying, with Archie exhibiting fine phonated form, and Wolfe unusually discomfited.

    "Too much foul language"

I was very upset with the awful language used in this. I read the book and don't remember such language. It was so bread that i skip 9/10th of the story ant went to chapter 16 just to hear the end. Very, very disappointed. There was no need for the foul language inn such a good book. I missed ALL of zzz Wolfe's interaction with Zeck because of it!

    "Good One!!"

Love this story, and reader is great! A very different turn of events allowing quite a twisted tale. Nero moves! If you know the stories you will get a kick out of that.

    "Rex Stout at his best."

Once again Nero Wolfe rises above the ordinary to eliminate his nemesis, Mr. Zeck. This volume being the culmination of 3 novels detailing what Motivated Wolfe to leave the Brownstone, leave New York, loose over 100 pounds then return to NYC to take Zeck on- a face to face ending that is unique among all of Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe stories.

"An Amazing Battle of Geniuses - One Good, One Evil"

Wolfe and Archie battle an evil genius in a life or death competition. Another example to support why readers love the entire household of Nero Wolfe .
