A woman private eye in a man's world, Molly Murphy is having a hard time succeeding as a New York shamus. That's why she agrees to go undercover for the NYPD to expose a pair of spiritualist sisters as con-artists even though the offer comes from police captain Daniel Sullivan. Sullivan had once won Molly's heart - until she discovered he already had a socialite fiancée and an upcoming wedding.
Now Molly's masquerading as a cousin from Ireland at the Hudson River mansion of Senator Barney Flynn. Flynn's invalid wife hopes the psychic sisters can contact her dead son, kidnapped and lost in a sensational crime. After an eerie séance, Molly isn't so sure the sisters are fakes, but she's certain the police bungled the kidnapping case. Soon Molly's questions are leading her toward danger, and her own sixth sense is warning her - murder lies ahead!

The books is an excellent, well researched, historical cozy mystery but, unfortunately, whomever did the editing had some serious technical issues. There are multiple 2 - 3 second segments of what is obviously another book (narrated by a man) interspersed in this recording as well as the first 3 other books in the series (there may be more but I"m only on book 4 right now). It's extremely jarring even though it doesn't seem that any of the book is missing (i.e. the errant recording is cut in but doesn't seem to replace any content). The other review of the recording notes the same errors so it's not just a problem with the download I got.
I hope Audible (who did the recording) reedits the books and takes these glitches out.
Great first listen
Kept me awake more than I like
Whilst making love to Daniel realising that 24yrs was long enough to be a virgin.
Please note that this is my wife's comment.
An Irish American Phryne Fisher has to succeed
Need to brush up on my Irish accent but can't wait now to listen to the whole series
This book takes you out of New York City and into the upper class lifestyle as Molly goes undercover once again! It is suspenseful and well worth the read. However, the audio does some strange things, at times another story seems to pop into this one you don't seem to miss any important information but it is very surprising. I believe it is just an editing error but it is too bad .I Hope you enjoy this suspenseful and at times chilling story.

…all the pondering!! It’s a bit much and can become rather tedious at times.
Aside from that one and only complaint, I’m having a great time working my way through the series; so glad I came across it! On to Book 5!
Old, tired member of the sandwich generation. Waiting to just get to heaven!!
This book was quite the ride! Daniel needs a good swift kick in the behind!!! Goodness, be a man with some back bone! Molly is off on another adventure and gets side tracked on a "cold case." Which proves not to be all that it seems.
I was so disappointed at who was killed off in this book. I kept waiting to find out that there had been some mistake. Sigh The murder came as a complete surprise!
I love this series and the narrator is one of my very favorites!
Molly escapes the typhoid epidemic in New York by accepting an undercover assignment from Capt Daniel Sullivan. Following Molly as she Investigates spiritualists sisters as well as the kidnapping of a little boy is a good story. Then, much to her shock, Molly came face-to-face with her past in Ireland. I enjoy Nicola Barber's narration. She does a good job differentiating the various characters. Daniel clearly cares for Molly, but he's still decieves her.
I'm a huge Rhys Bowen fan and this was a satisfying Molly Murphy book, but not the best. There were too many strands to the mystery (seance, sisters, cousins, Justin Hartley, neighbors, Jakob, etc) that none really got quite tied up in the end and we're basically abandoned in the middle. Plus, the way that the book ultimately tied up was confusing and without foreshadowing. However, Molly was her usual delightful, charming, progressive self and I could listen to Nicola Barber read forever. If you are a fan of the series, read it. If it's the first Bowen book you've found, go back to the beginning or go check out Her Royal Spyness.
loved it, was at the edge of my seat the whole way through. love how the excitement continues and there is adventure around every corner.
This is a great series: written well and read fantastically well. Love all the characters - they are developed extremely well!
It can be read by itself or as the continuation of a woman's life in the early 1920s, trying to make an independent career. Charming and though not historic per SE, it shows life during those difficult times. We really came a long way... And it wasn't easy! Light, pleasant reading.
A good read really enjoyed the storyline. The narration was clear and well read. Depicted the era of the story well.
