Publisher's summary

When David Barney was acquitted in the shooting death of his wife, Isabelle, a good many thought that justice had not been served, including Kenneth Voight, Isabelle's former husband. Now, five years later, Voight is the plaintiff in a civil suit in which Barney stands accused of Isabelle's wrongful death. The stakes are high (Isabelle's estate is worth millions), but time is running short: the statute of limitations will cut Voight off in only a matter of weeks.

Enter sexy, savvy ex-cop-turned-P.I. Kinsey Millhone, brought in by Voight to gather the necessary damning evidence. It doesn't take long, however, for Kinsey to find that while a lot of people hate David Barney, a lot more hated Isabelle. Suddenly, a simple civil case becomes a deadly hunt for someone who once got away with murder, and may again.

Critic reviews

"A sober, resolute Kinsey, romanceless at the moment, and a clever, meaty puzzle....Rack up another winner for Grafton." ( Kirkus Reviews)

I Is for Innocent: A Kinsey Millhone Mystery

The Kinsey Millhone's stories are easy reads/listen. The storylines are good and have enough suspense, mystery and unexpected twists to hold the listener's interest and attention. The storylines are varied from one book to another and the story being told relates the alphabet letter in the title of the novel.

The Publisher's Summary is an excellent synopsis of this story. To say more would most likely spoil the story for interested listeners.

I've enjoyed a few of Kinsey Millhone's stories. I love her sense of humor and dogged, relentlessness as she unravels the details of the story and ultimately unmask the wrong doer. Kinsey Millhone's stories can be read in any order. But reading in order (or nearly) will give the reader a good sense of who she is and how she has evolved in the PI world. Overall, however, Sue Grafton's story telling is much like tuning into your favorite TV show, you already know the setting, the premise (finding a wrong doer), some of the relationships, and each new story is a new adventure.

Most of the stories that I've read were narrated by Judy Kaye. This is the first one I've listened to which is narrated by Mary Peiffer. Although I prefer listening to narrator Judy Kaye's voice -- even though her voice sounds a bit older than Kinsey's age -- Mary Peiffer's voice is similar enough to Judy's and even sounds a bit younger. So, for me, Mary is a close second to Judy.

Awful narration

I could not listen to this due to the narration - I could not make it past the 1st chapter

Great all the way around

Another great story from Sue Grafton. Keeps you wondering as to "who done it"! Now I am on to "J".
Have to disagree with the other reviewer...I do like the narrator ...she actually makes the story better in my opinion.

Always Terrific

I is for Innocent is yet another great chapter in the Saga of Kinsey Millhone - the P.I. around whom the series revolves. I can’t specifically tell you anything about ‘I’ that I can’t say about the entire series, so here’s my opinion of the series instead:

I have vague recollections of seeing these books at the book store when I was in high school in the 80s; back then the series was probably up to about ‘C’ or ‘D’. I jumped in 20 years later in 2008 when ‘T’ came out and I love it - especially Kinsey’s attitude. It’s dry, cynical and sarcastic, however Sue Grafton has a way of writing that does not throw it over the top into cliché territory, but rather she aims for smart and hits the bull’s eye. Kinsey’s attitude makes her relatable; although I am not sure I would want to be her friend… she is a bit stand offish!

Picking up a story is like tuning into a TV show. You know the people, the setting, the premise, the relationships… and when you start a new book: it’s a new adventure. The story lines are so varied from one book to another, where does Sue come up with all her ideas? And they don’t seem formulaic to me at all, however I do spread out my reading on purpose! I might feel otherwise if I read them all back to back.

The stories can be read on their own, you don’t have to read them in order. Sure there are parts of Kinsey’s story that run through from one book to the next, but there is just enough exposition to catch you up if you missed part of her evolution, yet not so much that you’d be bored if you already know just where she is in her life.

Out of the 22 books out so far (the series is up to ‘V’) I have read 14 – all out of sequence:

K S A T C – 2008
Q – 2009
U L N – 2010
V M R – 2011
J I – 2012

I read the new ones right away when they come out, and since the releases are about 2 years apart, it gives me plenty of time to catch up on the older ones in between.

‘W’ should be out next summer in theory … stay tuned!

Like the story, not the narrator

I've gotten used to Judy Kaye's voice for Kinsey Millhone that I find it very difficult to listen to anyone else. That's the only reason for the 3 stars.

Miss Judy Kayes voice

Prefer her books to be read by Judy Kaye.. It's not the same without her.

Where's Judy Kaye??? Very disappointed ....

Would you listen to I Is for Innocent again? Why?

to 'hear' a different narrator than our own Kinsey as read by Judy Kaye. I have owned the series dating back to cassette tapes, and it never occurred to me that Judy wouldn't read each and every one. It was almost impossible to get into Kinsey's character ... you may want to think twice about getting this one unless it comes out by Judy.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Simply not our beloved Kinsey as read by Judy Kaye.

Flat Read

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The reading is very flat for this one. It is not simply an annoying voice tone, the lack of changes in tone make the story difficult to follow at times. As a result, the story itself isn't too exciting.

Not the best one.

struggled to finish it. The last few chapters was the only part that kept my attention.

One of the best of a great series

Love this book. It's one of my favourite Kinsey Milhone stories, with a real sense of mystery to it as well as some tense action.
