Publisher's Summary

All that writer Cece Caruso -- a 39-year-old former beauty queen from New Jersey -- really wants to do is finish her biography of Erle Stanley Gardner so that she can finally stop obsessing about Perry Mason. Well, that and find a 1970 silk chiffon Ossie Clark to add to her collection of vintage clothing. And fix the broken front doorknob on her West Hollywood bungalow. But first she has to help save her daughter's foundering marriage, which is more than Cece could manage for her own.

Everybody's got problems. In a last-ditch effort to kick a bad case of writer's block, Cece pays a visit to a prison inmate who had once corresponded with Gardner, pleading his innocence. Her impetuousness lands her smack in the middle of a case worthy of Perry Mason himself -- a double-edged mystery linking a forty-year-old murder to one where the body is still warm. Propelled by tenacity, curiosity, a sense of humor, and an understanding of human nature's dark side, Cece will channel the inner sleuth she never realized she possessed to find a killer who is all too real -- and all too close.

I Dreamed I Married Perry Mason is hip, sexy, and smart. Susan Kandel has created an unforgettable cast of characters planted firmly in terra California. Join Cece as she breaks into crime scenes, outfoxes lawyers, rekindles a romance with a police detective, and -- oh, yes -- finally makes her peace with Perry Mason.

"I Dreamed I Married Erle Stanley Gardner"

I really enjoyed this novel's references to Perry Mason books. I have always been a huge Perry Mason fan, and I was gratified to learn so much about Erle Stanley Gardner. The author had really done her research on ESG. She also gave me a great sense of place regarding Southern California (I'm on the East Coast).
Like other reviewers have mentioned, there wasn't much "mystery" in this this title. I figured out "who done it" long before the sleuth did, but she is still charming. I could have used fewer references to vintage clothes, but I became intrigued by the heroine's love interest, and I'm looking forward to listening to the second book in the series.

"I wanted to like this book"

I love the Perry Mason series. The idea of a mystery revolving around Stanley Gardner was interesting. This book was not. It was slow and not very interesting. I finally skipped to the end to find out that I was right about the villain. I'm not going to but any more in this series.

    "Let Down by Sleuth"

I expected more from this author. The main character- Cece- has spent her career reading and writing about Perry Mason as part of her research on Erle Stanley Gardner however when Cece stumbles into her own mystery she blunders in the most amateurish ways; she picks up and pockets a ruby ring after discovering a body in a bedroom- seriously? She ignores some of the most obvious clues for the sake of furthering the plot; She appears to be completely oblivious of clear signs directing the reader to the murderer. I expect a bit of surprise in a mystery; I knew who the murderer was about 3/4 of the way through the book. Particularly when the author creates a main character who we are told is so thoroughly steeped in a famous mystery writer it was frustrating to have her go about solving this mystery in such a naive way. This author also believes it is appealing to a reader to hear continuous criticisms of her ex-husband. It wears thin.

    "Please!"

I could not continue to listen because the narrator butchered the English language. For one example: "rich as Cro-ee-tious" for Croesus? Seriously!!!
