Pilgrim is the codename for a man who doesn’t exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for US intelligence. Before he disappeared into anonymous retirement, he wrote the definitive book on forensic criminal investigation. But that book will come back to haunt him. Publisher's Summary

National Book Awards 2014: Crime/Thriller Book of the Year

Can you commit the perfect crime?

Pilgrim is the codename for a man who doesn’t exist. The adopted son of a wealthy American family, he once headed up a secret espionage unit for US intelligence. Before he disappeared into anonymous retirement, he wrote the definitive book on forensic criminal investigation. But that book will come back to haunt him. It will help NYPD detective Ben Bradley track him down. And it will take him to a rundown New York hotel room where the body of a woman is found facedown in a bath of acid, her features erased, her teeth missing, her fingerprints gone.

It is a textbook murder - and Pilgrim wrote the book. What begins as an unusual and challenging investigation will become a terrifying race against time to save America from oblivion. Pilgrim will have to make a journey from a public beheading in Mecca to a deserted ruin on the Turkish coast via a Nazi death camp in Alsace and the barren wilderness of the Hindu Kush in search of the faceless man who would commit an appalling act of mass murder in the name of his god.

"What a great story - wow!"

I was told that if there as one thriller this year that I read, this had to be it, and I admit, it is brilliant! Well read, and thoroughly gripping, I could not put it down, well done!

"The thriller you need to listen to this year!"

I really enjoyed this story! I devoured volume 1 in no time and quickly went through volume 2 as well! Terry Hayes has a great sense of humour and I enjoy his writing style. The first person perspective gives so much more depth to the main character. His structure and pace was spot on too. Christopher Ragland does a good job but I found he battled with the accents and I couldn't get into his female voice.Overall, this is definitely a thriller you want to listen to this year. One get's an insight of the tragedy that is 911 and what goes on in the minds of people that want to destroy life on such a scale. My first five star rating.

Gripping Story! Smashed through this book in no time at all. Only let down was having to pay twice for Vol 1 & 2, you wouldn't expect to do that in Waterstones, poor form Audiable!

"Best thriller in a long long time."

I'm reviewing Volume 2 as it's pointless to review Volume 1. They're one book but the publishers decided to sell them as two volumes. Such a shame as I'm sure lots of readers were furious that they had to fork out twice. That said, it's totally worth it. I love thrillers but I'm bored by the lame and by-the-numbers stuff that the likes of Lee Child and James Patterson crank out (who the hell is reading that garbage? "Everyone!" I hear you say). Anyway, I Am Pilgrim is such a detailed, unusual and engaging spin on the cliched old spy story that it'll give you new hope for the genre. Enjoy.

"More holes than plot for me!"

I got tired of hearing about 'lucky breaks' and 'good fortune'. For a super-agent Pilgrim also spent a lot of the time referring to key things he failed to observe.
I really struggled to keep interested enough to finish this. Not sure that it was worth it.....

Where does I Am Pilgrim, Volume 2 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Quite simply a superb roller coaster ride that is adrealin fulled all the wat to the climactic end.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Pilgrim without doubt a ruthless, single minded, mudering real bad man. His character is delivered in such a scary and believeable way, his plan is diabolically brilliant. a race against time between the pilgrim and the americans that is so well written and the plots run at breakneck pace where i did not want to stop listening, however there are rest periods in between to let one catch one's breath. Make sure you have a nice glass of your favourite tipple, sit in your favourite chair and dive in, oh! unplug the phone it is simply to good to be interupted.

Have you listened to any of Christopher Ragland’s other performances? How does this one compare?

He is completely the right voice to narrate this book, they compliment each other so well.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It is a very thought provoking book, it made me want to look at at middle eastern history.

    Any additional comments?

Cannot wait for the movie to be released"
