Publisher's summary

When college kids hiking near an abandoned military industrial complex in West Virginia mysteriously disappear, special agent Janet Carter - earnest, honest, and fed up with the stifling chauvinistic environment at the Roanoke FBI headquarters - is called in to investigate. Unfortunately, there are no leads - it's as if the three just vanished into thin air.

The authorities at the FBI are quick to write off the case as teenage runaways, and order Janet off the case - but not before she has the chance to speak with the father of one of the missing, Edwin Kriess.

Kriess is an ex-"sweeper", a member of an elite CIA task force trained to track down and bring in rogue agents. To be a sweeper means to be expertly trained in the art of hunting and killing, and Kriess was not only a sweeper himself, but the agent in charge of training and leading the entire program. Only something went wrong - an assignment to track down an agent involved in a Chinese espionage plot ended in a bloody massacre, and threatened to reveal a monumental government cover-up. Kriess was quietly sacrificed to the scandal, and has since lived in solitude.

But now his daughter is missing, and he knows that she didn't run away - and he will do anything to find her and bring her abductors to justice. His search brings him back to the abandoned industrial complex, where two right-wing religious fanatics - tied to the Waco disaster and inspired by the Oklahoma City bombing - are building a hydrogen bomb.

When the FBI learns of Kriess' independent investigations, they fear the worst: he knows too many secrets already, and if his search efforts are successful, a scandal of epic proportions would unfold. They decide they need a plant, someone who has access to Kriess, and can win his trust. Someone who will report back what he knows, and what he finds - and that person is Janet Carter.

Critic reviews

"Deutermann's latest blast at the FBI/ CIA establishment [is] read with muscular intelligence by Hill." ( Publishers Weekly)
"A solid read from an author whose own tradecraft is every bit as good as that of his characters." ( Booklist)

Incredible

I've read hundreds of Audible books by some of the best known authors and readers. By far this book outshines them all. The author,'s use of words and some comedic release like "sounds od sirens" is magical. The author,'s ability to maintain tension throughout the story and amazing ability to tie all the little pieces together boggles my mind. This book is a reader's delight that allows the slow, almost agonizing release of adrenalin and tension and brings the ending full cycle!

it was just ok

The frustrating thing about this book was that the main character is supposed to be this amazing FBI operative who has all these skills and talents, yet when in certain situations he is just plain stupid. For example, If you see a potential terrorist come out a door and leave....why wouldn't you look and see what was on the other side of that door? The author was trying to keep the story going by keeping information hidden, but logically it just didn't come across very well. I kept on thinking...this guy is really stupid lol. Which I am sure was not the reaction the author wanted about his hero.

Loved it v

Listened to this going to NH from Ohio and the return trip home. Thoroughly entertained the whole way.
Female voice was not the best but narration as a whole was very good.

Fantastic!!!!

I had never known of Peter D and found this book by following my favourite narrator to the title! An amazingly interesting and riveting story! Dick is always great but when given material like this to read , Dicks skills shine even more brightly ! Wow! A word of caution! Don't start this book if you have things to do as you will not get them done for 17 hours!

A real page turner!

This book was extremely suspenseful and because of the many cliff hangers, it was hard to put down. The characters were interesting, the plot was unique and it was very well written. I highly recommend it!

Drowned in the detail

This storyline was good , the characters well developed, the narrator was great but all the detail did me in. I found my attention wandering as it went on and on in excruciating detail about everything. I don't really need to know exactly how they did everything. If you love the nitty gritty then this will be a great read for you. I however could not stay attuned to the story and probably missed more than I got because the details were boring!!

Fantastic!

An absolutely awesome audio book! Great story line as well as epic narration by Dick Hill. In fact, the intriguing title of the book along with Dick Hill was definitely too much to pass up.

Too many voices needed

What aspect of Dick Hill’s performance would you have changed?

I love Dick Hill. I've chosen books just because he is narrating.
In this book, there were 3 characters where the voices were not up to his standard. The voice of the main female & a couple of agent.
I really think having another narrator in addition to Dick would have made it much better.

Any additional comments?

I would still recommend this book.
