Publisher's summary

When college kids hiking near an abandoned military industrial complex in West Virginia mysteriously disappear, special agent Janet Carter - earnest, honest, and fed up with the stifling chauvinistic environment at the Roanoke FBI headquarters - is called in to investigate. Unfortunately, there are no leads - it's as if the three just vanished into thin air.

The authorities at the FBI are quick to write off the case as teenage runaways, and order Janet off the case - but not before she has the chance to speak with the father of one of the missing, Edwin Kriess.

Kriess is an ex-"sweeper", a member of an elite CIA task force trained to track down and bring in rogue agents. To be a sweeper means to be expertly trained in the art of hunting and killing, and Kriess was not only a sweeper himself, but the agent in charge of training and leading the entire program. Only something went wrong - an assignment to track down an agent involved in a Chinese espionage plot ended in a bloody massacre, and threatened to reveal a monumental government cover-up. Kriess was quietly sacrificed to the scandal, and has since lived in solitude.

But now his daughter is missing, and he knows that she didn't run away - and he will do anything to find her and bring her abductors to justice. His search brings him back to the abandoned industrial complex, where two right-wing religious fanatics - tied to the Waco disaster and inspired by the Oklahoma City bombing - are building a hydrogen bomb.

When the FBI learns of Kriess' independent investigations, they fear the worst: he knows too many secrets already, and if his search efforts are successful, a scandal of epic proportions would unfold. They decide they need a plant, someone who has access to Kriess, and can win his trust. Someone who will report back what he knows, and what he finds - and that person is Janet Carter.

Critic reviews

"Deutermann's latest blast at the FBI/ CIA establishment [is] read with muscular intelligence by Hill." ( Publishers Weekly)
"A solid read from an author whose own tradecraft is every bit as good as that of his characters." ( Booklist)

The problem with nostalgia

This is a good story, but if I were asked what it was 'about', I'd have to answer that is was 'about the government'. The story is certainly worth the time, but some of the authors fixation on 'the good ole days' seem to be a bit nostalgic. I don't think many informed readers would agree that JE Hoover represented the golden age; nor do I think the ole TV show 'The FBI' presented an unvarnished presentation of the bureaus' inner workings. Finally, the author leaves no hope for salvation for the CIA (unlike the FBI and ATF). ["The CIA is just plain rotten"]

Okay

More gadgets than McGyver!

More politics than cable news!

More "big" 45's than you can wave a Glock at!

it was just ok

The frustrating thing about this book was that the main character is supposed to be this amazing FBI operative who has all these skills and talents, yet when in certain situations he is just plain stupid. For example, If you see a potential terrorist come out a door and leave....why wouldn't you look and see what was on the other side of that door? The author was trying to keep the story going by keeping information hidden, but logically it just didn't come across very well. I kept on thinking...this guy is really stupid lol. Which I am sure was not the reaction the author wanted about his hero.

Good listen

Story is a little dated since it was copy written in 2001but still was worth the listen. Reader was very engaging.

Excellent read

I was impressed with the plot lines. It held together well, I wanted some more closure but it ended well enough. I wouldn't hesitate to give this one a go. Worth the credit.

Could Have Been Great

The good news, Dick Hill narrated the book. Bad news, he could not save this one. It was just tooooooo long. There was a real good story here and at times it came through, but it just dragged on too long. Could have been shortened by at least 3 or 4 hours if not more. The attention to all the detail made it feel like the story was being made up on the spot and not thought through. It just started to lose credibility as time went on.

The lead character did not live up to the initial billing. I kept waiting for the superhero to take charge and show me his stuff, but it just never happened. It was like everyone had a little chunk of cryptonite in their pocket causing superman to be, well just average. Lots of talk but no action.

That being said, the story was interesting and I enjoyed it enough, but it could have been great.

An Iconic Rogue Hero ......

Fans of BobLee Swagger, Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp and Dewey Andreas - meet Edwin Kriess.... and Kriess is angry and on the hunt. Uh oh!

I became a Deutermann fan several months ago and went thru his 4-book Cam Richter series in several weeks. This one is a stand-alone but could be a series. I guess the term "formula plot" is supposed to be a negative but not for me. With the familiar voice of Dick Hill, I am in familiar territory with a rugged iconic "operative" who has run afoul of the bureaucrats..... sound familiar?

Some reviewers analyze books like they critique wine. Not me. I like the story - the characters - the narrator. If you like those characters I noted above, I think you will like Hunting Season too.

Three thrillers in one!

Great story with loads of twists and turns, it's really three thrillers in one. Great narration as well, which made this book a real treat!
