Publisher's summary

How the Light Gets In is the ninth Chief Inspector Gamache Novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny.

"There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." —
Leonard Cohen

Christmas is approaching, and in Québec it's a time of dazzling snowfalls, bright lights, and gatherings with friends in front of blazing hearths. But shadows are falling on the usually festive season for Chief Inspector Armand Gamache. Most of his best agents have left the Homicide Department, his old friend and lieutenant Jean-Guy Beauvoir hasn't spoken to him in months, and hostile forces are lining up against him. When Gamache receives a message from Myrna Landers that a longtime friend has failed to arrive for Christmas in the village of Three Pines, he welcomes the chance to get away from the city. Mystified by Myrna's reluctance to reveal her friend's name, Gamache soon discovers the missing woman was once one of the most famous people not just in North America, but in the world, and now goes unrecognized by virtually everyone except the mad, brilliant poet Ruth Zardo.

As events come to a head, Gamache is drawn ever deeper into the world of Three Pines. Increasingly, he is not only investigating the disappearance of Myrna's friend but also seeking a safe place for himself and his still-loyal colleagues. Is there peace to be found even in Three Pines, and at what cost to Gamache and the people he holds dear?

No TV screen needed

Who needs a TV if you have a Louise Penny book with Ralph Cosham to read it to you?! I've loved them all, but this might be my favorite so far; surely the most edge-ofyour-seat suspenseful. I could "see" it taking place; feel the emotions of the characters the author has revealed to us (the reader & the listeners) by now, even "place myself" in a part of the world I have no personal experience of. Thank you for including the conversation of author & reader at the end; I'm as astonished as the author was to learn he reads these to us "cold," a feat very few can accomplish successfully.

The best yet

After nearly quitting Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache books (I’ve read all in series up though this one-totally put off by last one,-The Beautiful mystery)Louise Penny books in order, I took a chance on this one and was hooked immediately. This was an absolute hair-raising read. Beautifully written as always.

Looking forward to the next one!

My favorite book in the Gamache series

Louise Penny masterfully writes the denouement to all the previous books. I’ve reread this book a few times to enjoy the unfolding, revealing, and healing within the community of Three Pines.

A new fan

This was my first book by Louise Penny. I know, I started at the wrong end of the series. Still loved Three Pines and its inhabitants. Now I see why so many are such fans of the series.

Oddly, even though I really liked this book, I am perfectly content just savoring this book for a while and not experiencing the previous books.

My First Louise Penny Story

I loved Ralph Cosham's narration of this story. I really enjoyed the French peppered in along the way. It was an excellent listen. But it was a bit too long for me. That may just be me. I will look for her other works, but am going to look for shorter ones.
