Publisher's summary

Mike held his son's hand and told him to "hold tight", and he could feel the little hand dig into his. But the crush got bigger, and the little hand slipped from his - and Mike felt that horrible panic, as if a wave hit them at the beach and it was washing his baby out with the tide.

The separation lasted only a few seconds, 10 at the most, but Mike would never forget the spike in his blood and the terror of those brief few moments.

Tia and Mike Baye never imagined they'd become the type of overprotective parents who spy on their kids. But their 16-year-old son, Adam, has been unusually distant lately, and after the suicide of his classmate, Spencer Hill - the latest in a string of issues at school - they can't help but worry. They install a sophisticated spy program on Adam's computer, and within days they are jolted by a message from an unknown correspondent addressed to their son: "Just stay quiet and all safe."

Meanwhile, browsing through an online memorial for Spencer put together by his classmates, Betsy Hill is struck by a photo that appears to have been taken on the night of her son's death...and he wasn't alone. She thinks it is Adam Baye standing just outside the camera's range, but when Adam goes missing, it soon becomes clear that something deep and sinister has infected their community.

For Tia and Mike Baye, the question they must answer is this: When it comes to your kids, is it possible to know too much?

Critic reviews

"Parents will find this compulsive page-turner from Edgar-winner Coben...particularly unnerving." ( Publishers Weekly)

Excellent

I couldn’t stop listening. There was nothing right or wrong. If you have children, you have to make the judgment calls. This read kept me on the edge for sure! This author is very talented in telling a story & leaving out no details.

enough twists to keep you wondering!

Fun, entertaining listen. Harlan Coben does a good job presenting the characters, their problems, solutions and thought processes. Scott Brick narration is his usual believable voice. This was a great diversion during the day-don't miss this enjoyable audio!

Excellent!!!

I found myself in deep thought throughout this book. So many lives intertwined together and just a few choices changed the direction of their lives. It is true, we try to do the very best each time we make a choice, but all our choices have consequences that we have to live or die with. It reminds me to slow down and enjoy every moment of each day as well as my family and friends. Thank You!

Outstanding! Great twists and turns!

Finally, a great story, well-narrated, without any of the profanity found in most books/movies today.

Brick reading Coben equals WOW!

I loved this story and the narration. It is tense, suspenseful and full of characters that all come together in the end. Everything in this listen has a purpose. This story is about family...all different kinds and what people will do to protect them. Loved it!

Good story

Love Coben anyway, but I'd say this is one of his best. Great performance, too, lots of emotion. Twisty story with great ending.

It gripped me and always kept me guessing

So as the title states, it was a very interesting book to listen to, with a great narrator. The only "negative" is that sometimes I would get lost with who the person was, but always caught up quickly. I think that was more of a me problem vs a book problem. Totally recommend.

T spy or not to spy

Every parents dilemma over how much privacy to give their kids in this day and age is at the forefront of this thriller. In times past the decisions were a little easier, but in this high tech environment where we can spy on them so much easier and so much deeper, is hard to know how deep is right and how deep goes too far. The parents in this book struggle with those questions and sometimes you wonder if over-protectiveness can cause more problems than it solves. These parents are everyday people trying to do the best then can. The twists and turns in the plot, kept me on edge and hating to put it down. Scott Brick's performance was as usual, spot on.
