Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: After hearing Robert Forster's narration, it would be hard to imagine anyone else playing Keller, the contract killer suffering a mid-life crisis. Forster manages to elicit empathy for a cold-blooded murderer, while perfectly capturing the wry wit of Lawrence Block's writing. —Steve Feldberg

Publisher's Summary

Keller possesses all the qualities of a professional killer. He's cool, confident, reclusive, icy, and ruthlessly efficient. But this seasoned hit man is also prone to self-doubt as he finds himself caught in the clutches of a mid-life crisis. Between contracts, he learns a few crucial truths about himself and the ways of the world he's become detached from, and winds up a wiser - if not better - man.

    "Killer Book"

I very, very much enjoyed this book and in part because Robert Forster is one of my favorite readers. His voice always seems to fit with the characters and the characters in each book all have the personality of his voice (does that make sense?).

I stumbled onto this book because of the featured daily cheap price, and I'm so glad I found Keller the Killer. Funny, dry, witty and a sociopath...who could ask for more? Block's imagination is so bizarre and creative, it's just a good thing he doesn't apply that talent to actually being a hit man. Hmmm...maybe some cold cases should be reviewed for similarities to Keller!

Anyway, great hours of entertainment supplied by this book. One of my all time favorite listening experiences.

    "Hope for a sequal"

This book is a great listen, you find yourself developing a fondness for the character even though you know his profession is far from honorable. Robert Forster does a great job as the narrator. I hope there will be a sequal in the near future.

    "Great Bargain!"

An entertaining story, with a bit of philosophy and wit, nicely written and even funny at times. Other times, it's deadly serious. You are reminded that what this man (The Hit Man) does for a living is dreadful, but can't help but empathize with him, especially since he is a careful, not cold, but thoughtful character.

    "Can't miss with this price"

I am giving this book 5 stars because it is such a great listen for such a low price. I listened to it while I was running on the treadmill, and it was very entertaining.

    "Beware the Hit Man Cometh!"

This book is wonderful in that it keeps the reader/listener wanting more. The storyline keeps moving and does NOT bore you. My opinion of this title would be to suggest it to anyone who likes to listen/read mystery/thriller styles. The main character in the story is at times comical and others very dramatic. Keep your mind open when it comes to predetermined opinions about killers and the MOB. This story does not fit the pattern.

    "Humorous with interesting characters"

As the title suggests, this book is about a hit man. Apart from his profession, Keller (the main character) is quite an enjoyable and likeable character. The book seems like a collection of short stories, and given Keller?s profession, that makes a lot of sense. I thought Hit Man was well written; humorous with interesting characters. I also thought the author did an outstanding job of keeping the descriptions of violence to a minimum. As an added bonus, the narration was EXCELLENT.

The only downside that I saw to the book is that the character is so likeable and the violence so nondescript ? you lose some perspective about Keller?s profession and just think he?s just doing a normal job. I think this book can desensitize you in a very subtle way.

This dynamic duo have created a piece of work that I often listen to again and again, which is not the case with other books. Great job!

Interesting subject matter. It goes to show you that even a hitman has a life.

I got just a little bored near the end with the whole hobby thing, but the vast majority of this book made for a great listen.
