New York Times best-selling thriller master, Lee Child returns with an exclusive eBook novella. In the midst of a savage heat wave and an infamous murder spree, a blackout awakens the dark side of the city that never sleeps - and a young Jack Reacher takes action as only he can.
July 1977. Jack Reacher is almost seventeen, and he stops in New York City on the way to visit his brother at West Point. The summer heat is suffocating, the city is bankrupt, and the mad gunman known as Son of Sam is still on the loose. Reacher meets a woman with a problem, and agrees to help her...but then the power grid fails and the lights go out, plunging the lawless city into chaos. What does a visiting teenager do in the dark? If that visiting teenager is Jack Reacher, the answer is plenty.

Don't judge Lee Child or Jack Reacher by this short story. Normally, I think Child can do no wrong, but this story is disjointed, the action isn't believable, and as I think every reviewer is going to comment on, it has a weird sex scene, I mean, ick. Also, he's 16 in this story and his relationship with the older woman almost got weird.
The ending was also really odd and not satisfying.
I've enjoyed the two other short stories I've listened to by Child. I loved the one where Reacher was even younger. Listen to the other ones instead of this one,
Lee Child should be ashamed for allowing this title to be published. I thought it must have been a first draft rejected in creative writing class 20 years ago. Not, for heaven's sake, his latest work!
Myst/thrillers and ✨fun fantasies✨are my favorites but always open for a good story.
This was a good short about Jack when he was 16. It's hard to picture JR ever being young so this was just a little insight into how worldly and mature he was very early on in his life.
It's the 70's and Jack is on his way to visit his brother at West Point when he stops off in NY for a very full night of fun, that includes: a female FBI agent, the mob, a blackout, an unexpexted death, scorching heat, Son of Sam, a trist with a college girl and lots of action packed fighting. Just a night in the life of Jack Reacher.
Retired Political Science professor from a community college. Especially like Legal Thrillers.
This novella introduces Jack Reacher as a high school student with the street smarts and skills of a thirty five year old, seasoned crime fighter. His suppositions and intuition are unrealistic for a person of such a young age.
This is the worse writing by L.C. The narration??? Ugh,
cannot believe it is same person that does "the big books"very disappointing
I can't think of anyone really enjoying this book.
Not have written it at all. Or he could have developed this into a full story. As it is, there is no character development and the story is just scattered.
Dick Hill is always great. He is the ONLY good thing about this book.
It killed 2 hours of my time while I cleaned the house.
I have read all of the Reacher books and have really loved most of them (there are a couple of really bad ones though) but I will not be purchasing any more shorts.
This has nothing to do with the book, but Tom Cruise as Reacher? He is as close to Reacher as Melissa McCarthy. Unforgivable.
This young Reacher short story is even more unbelievable than his usual but still fun. Gave it three stars because what happens to one of the characters at the end just adds to much to the impossible.
I love to listen to all kinds of mystery and crime books along with biographies, romance and self help books.
Maybe. The story line was ok but was to short. I think it only lasted 2 hours. It was just getting good when it ended.
Put in more characters and have drawn out the story line and the characters.
He kept my attention
no, it was soo short.
yes, it ended oddly.
I lvoe Lee Child's book and have read many of them but I don't think they translate well to audio
I love the CD audiobooks and I wanted to try the Audible to play in the car from my Kindle app on my phone. I would definitely recommend the story but not necessarily in the Audible format.
It compares to all the Reacher books.
The first car ride in the beginning, I didn't see what was coming. Well done.
I was happy to learn that the child was not kidnapped by the bad guys.
The audible translation is hard to understand in some of the time and it is way to fast. I tried it with just headsets, with the speaker in the car and a separate portable speaker. Still it was like the tempo was too fast. I'll try another book and then give up and go back to buying CD's.
