Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling thriller master, Lee Child returns with an exclusive eBook novella. In the midst of a savage heat wave and an infamous murder spree, a blackout awakens the dark side of the city that never sleeps - and a young Jack Reacher takes action as only he can.

July 1977. Jack Reacher is almost seventeen, and he stops in New York City on the way to visit his brother at West Point. The summer heat is suffocating, the city is bankrupt, and the mad gunman known as Son of Sam is still on the loose. Reacher meets a woman with a problem, and agrees to help her...but then the power grid fails and the lights go out, plunging the lawless city into chaos. What does a visiting teenager do in the dark? If that visiting teenager is Jack Reacher, the answer is plenty.

I love espionage, legal, and detective thrillers but listen to most genres. Very frequent reviews. No plot spoilers! Please excuse my typos!

"Jack Reacher in New York City at age 16"

High Heat is a novella set in New York City not long before his 17th birthday. Reacher has flown in from South Korea where is Marine dad is stationed to visit his brother Joe who is a freshman at West Point. He decides to spend a night in the city before seeing his brother. It is a very eventful night!

    "Cheap, but still overpriced!"

Lee Child should be ashamed for allowing this title to be published. I thought it must have been a first draft rejected in creative writing class 20 years ago. Not, for heaven's sake, his latest work!

"Weird and unlike Child and Reacher"

Don't judge Lee Child or Jack Reacher by this short story. Normally, I think Child can do no wrong, but this story is disjointed, the action isn't believable, and as I think every reviewer is going to comment on, it has a weird sex scene, I mean, ick. Also, he's 16 in this story and his relationship with the older woman almost got weird.

The ending was also really odd and not satisfying.

I've enjoyed the two other short stories I've listened to by Child. I loved the one where Reacher was even younger. Listen to the other ones instead of this one,

    "Young Jack"

This was a good short about Jack when he was 16. It's hard to picture JR ever being young so this was just a little insight into how worldly and mature he was very early on in his life.

It's the 70's and Jack is on his way to visit his brother at West Point when he stops off in NY for a very full night of fun, that includes: a female FBI agent, the mob, a blackout, an unexpexted death, scorching heat, Son of Sam, a trist with a college girl and lots of action packed fighting. Just a night in the life of Jack Reacher.

    "Great Young Reacher"

Sixteen year old Jack Reacher is on his way to West Point to visit his brother Joe when he decides to make a quick visit to NYC. There he meets a female FBI agent who is perhaps just a bit too gung ho in her pursuit of a minor organized crime figure. As usual Reacher is able to help her both physically and intellectually. Reacher also finds a brief romantic interest in the person of a college girl he meets on the night of the NYC blackout of 1978. While in the midst of receiving oral sex from the college girl he spots a lurker who will soon be known as the Son of Sam.
This is an excellent novella and in the best tradition of Jack Reacher. Great Buy.

    "Unrealistic Premise"

This novella introduces Jack Reacher as a high school student with the street smarts and skills of a thirty five year old, seasoned crime fighter. His suppositions and intuition are unrealistic for a person of such a young age.

"Heard Lots a Chance to Read Lee Child-Jack Reacher"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A bit of realistic story...I've heard so much about Jack Reacher & his creator, Lee Child. I thought this a great chance to try it out-a short listen at a great price.

Hopefully, my reaction to this one book is NOT reflective of the entire series. I am so disappointed and let down by what I've understood to be a seasoned and veteran writer.

JR is 16 in NYC. He is with a prostitude (who he pledges to come back to in a year,) an undercover agent, he sees the Son of Sam serial killer. He has a relationship with a beat reporter -at 16 he has connections already- in a way he can exchange information for favors. It is all too much, for this listener. It is preposterous and unbelievable.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Probably one of my new 'trashy' romance novels.

Would you be willing to try another one of Dick Hill’s performances?

I usually love Dick Hill, but he was so disappointing as well. Mis cast for this book, he sounds like a mature man and his gravel voice is perfect for a rogue CIA operative. Jack Reacher at 16 sounded like he'd been smoking 10 packs of cigarettes a day from birth. The female characters ALL sounded like a man with an overdone lisp!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No, not one and I'm a glass half ful kinda gal. I WILL give Lee Child another chance some day, but...

OK 1 redeeming quality - I spent less than $1.50 for this 2 hour novella

    Any additional comments?

NOTE: Volence and stong language. Description of encounter with a prostitude

Credit/ $ Worthy: No on both accounts-not even at 25% off (actual cost to me $1.46)

    "Unexciting Jack Reacher Adventure"

    Lee Child wrote this? Really?

'Hight Heat' is an interlude to fill a gap between Jack Reacher novels, but apart from killing a two hour drive while listening to this audiobook, there isn't too much to redeem this novella. I found 'High Heat' a below average short story that is well narrated by Dick Hill, but the story itself is one of unrealistic and unbelievable fantasy, and definitely not a credible Jack Reacher at 16 adventure at all. I suppose some Lee Child/Jack Reacher fans would consider any Reacher story to be better than none at all, which is fair enough, but this is not a typical Jack Reacher adventure... or a typical Lee Child story even. So this one is for diehard fans only.

Tedious story telling made worse by the reader's style. Not up to Child's usual standards...
