Publisher's summary

Alexander Lawson is a former detective for Northern Ireland's police force. After a disastrous six-month stint in the drug squad, he became addicted to heroin and resigned in disgrace. Now 24, sickly, and on the dole, Alex learns that his high-school love, Victoria Patawasti, has been murdered in America. Victoria's wealthy family sends Alex to Colorado to investigate the case, and he seizes the opportunity for a chance at redemption.

But things don't go as planned. Plagued by a heroin habit, forced to go on the run after the only credible witness to Victoria's murder is accidentally killed, wanted by both the Colorado cops and the Ulster police, Alex struggles just to stay alive.

Gritty, with spot-on dialogue and black humor, Hidden River is a dynamic thriller.

This is not the one to read

If you like Sean Duffy and Michael Forsythe and are looking for another like that- don’t read this one.
If you’ve never read Adrian McKinty- don’t read this one first.
If you’re a McKinty fan and don’t want to be put off with him until the last 11 seconds of the book- don’t read this one.

Much more then expected

There were many twists and turns. The ending was not at all what I had expected.

Complex, imaginative and craftily woven.

The cleverly woven plot of this uncanny crime thriller weaves a beautifully crafted, unpredictable path from beginning to end of the karmic circle of it's story. Gerard Doyle's narration is well paired to this production.

PLEASE EDIT, IT WAS A LONG SLOG.

It was a long slog through Denver and drugs and thought processes that were repetitive and predictable. The author is clearly bright and seems determined to make sure we all know that.

not my favorite

Best part of this whole story is the narrator, Gerald Doyle, he's really good in all Adrian Mckinty's books. I didn't really care for the way heroin is romanticized in this story. The main character shoots up several times a day but still doesn't think of himself as an addict . Plus the author goes into great lengths describing how wonderful the high is, but falls very short in describing what kind of utter torment a person goes through to be rid of the beast. I really like other books Adrian had written, but this one not so much at all.

It was okay

It was okay, but I thought it to be a bit boring - unlike the Michael Forsyth character in the author's other books. Not sure why I felt this way, but listening to the number of times this guy would shoot up his dope may be the reason. I found nothing interesting about how a junkie feels while on a high.
