Hell Gate | [Linda Fairstein]

Hell Gate

In Hell Gate, Alex finds her attention torn between investigating a shipwreck that has contraband cargo-human cargo-and the political sex scandal of a promising New York congressman now fallen from grace. When Alex discovers that a woman from the wreck and the congressman's lover have the same rose tattoo-the brand of a "snakehead", a master of a human trafficking operation-it dawns on her that these cases aren't as unrelated as they seem and that the entire political landscape of New York City could hang in the balance of her investigation.

Publisher's Summary

Head of the Sex Crimes Unit of the district attorney's office in Manhattan for decades, Linda Fairstein is America's most visible legal expert on sexual assault and domestic violence-which is why she writes some of the most compelling crime thrillers of our time and why her Alexandra Cooper series has been topping bestseller list for more than a decade. Fans turn to Fairstein for ripped-from-the-headline crimes, cutting-edge investigations, and vindication for victims. Linda Fairstein brings readers inside a world of which they can't get enough, but one they hope to never see in real life. And for her 12th novel, Fairstein takes Alexandra Cooper inside a world she'd rather not see.

New York City politics have always been filled with intrigue and behind-the-scenes deals.

As Alex looks on at the nameless victims in the morgue, she realizes she's looking at the present-day face of New York's long, dark tradition of human trafficking-a tradition that began hundreds of years ago with slave trade from Africa, now a multimillion-dollar industry that will stop at no cost, even if that cost is Alex's life.

    "Wasted Credit"

In a word, boring. If you want an Alex Cooper novel, please choose one of the earlier ones.

    "Hell Gate"

Chose this book because my favorite reader, Barbara Rosenblat, was narrating it. I enjoyed the tit-bits of NYC history that was scattered throughout the book. The topic of human trafficking is sad but made interesting by Fairstein. Lost of fast pace action and a bit of humor intertwine the story. Enjoyed the book and will look for more by this author.

    "Painful"

Having listened to hundreds of books on Audible I have come to one which takes the cake as being the most painful to try and listen. This book could have been written on 40 pages and, maybe, would have been an average read. However, nine (9) cds later and this book made me want to give up books forever.

    "Tour of Historic Buildings"

New York City is the setting. The story revolves around human trafficking. Bodies wash up on shore. An assistant DA is called in the watch over the investigation. She and her NYPD detective pal Mike follow clues through many of the city's historic mansions, including the mayor's official residence, Gracie Mansion. Lots of plot twists though not a lot of character development. I found Barbara Rosenblat's low rumbling voice hard to hear over the traffic noise during my comute.

    "Hell Gate"

Love all of Linda Fairstein's books except this one. This is the first one I heard instead of reading. For some reason this book was hard to follow the storyline or care about, except her interactions with the young alien girls. She went off to many tangents away from her core story.

    "HORRIFIC reader ... Buyer BEWARE"

If you want to listen to Barbara Rosenblat suck cough drops and swallow her saliva and gasp for breath during every pause; by all means feel free to waste a credit on this book.

It was so annoying that I stopped listening after 10 minutes.

While I love Linda Fairstein, and ordered her entire "Alex Cooper" series, the reader makes it impossible to listen to them.

Sorry to have wasted my $$$ and credits.
