Editorial reviews

Editors Select, August 2013 - I am absolutely not joking when I say I had to beat out no less than 7 other hard-core in-house Royal Spyness fans for the privilege to choose Rhys Bowen’s newest installment as my top pick for August. If you have already started listening to this series I don’t really need to talk to you because you’ll already be as excited as I am about Heirs and Graces. If you have not picked up Her Royal Spyness then listen up: Please, I beg of you, do not hesitate. I have yet to recommend this series without effusively positive results. I’m not generally a cozy mystery fan, but Rhys Bowen’s delightful saga is my top favorite series to date, and Katherine Kellgren is at her most talented and charming in her spot-on performance of the myriad voices at play.

Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Mystery, 2014

As 35th in line for the throne, Lady Georgiana Rannoch may not be the most sophisticated young woman, but she knows her table manners. It's forks on the left, knives on the right - not in His Majesty's back….

"Here I am thinking the education I received at my posh Swiss finishing school would never come in handy. And while it hasn't landed me a job, or a husband, it has convinced Her Majesty the Queen and the Dowager Duchess to enlist my help. I have been entrusted with grooming Jack Altringham - the Duke's newly discovered heir fresh from the Outback of Australia - for high society. The upside is I am to live in luxury at one of England's most gorgeous stately homes. But upon arrival at Kingsdowne Place, my dearest Darcy has been sent to fetch Jack, leaving me stuck in a manor full of miscreants…none of whom are too pleased with the discovery of my new ward. And no sooner has the lad been retrieved than the Duke announces he wants to choose his own heir. With the house in a hubbub over the news, Jack's hunting knife somehow finds its way into the Duke's back. Eyes fall, backs turn, and fingers point to the young heir. As if the rascal wasn't enough of a handful, now he's suspected of murder. Jack may be wild, but I'd bet the crown jewels it wasn't he who killed the Duke…."

One of the best narrators on audible

One of my favorites stories in this fun mystery series about an impoverished young woman, 32nd in line for the British Throne, who manages to survive on her wits and crime solving skills. Katherine Kellgren is an amazing reader. I don't know how she manages the many diverse accents and tones of voice which make every character convincing and indelible.

Love this book and this series!

To find a whodunit with a touch of romance (nothing explicit) is unusual and such a gift for us avid "whodunit" readers. Rhy Bowen delivers book after book, detailing the life of Lady Georgiana, who always seems to find herself embroiled in a murder mystery. And, thanks to her cleverness, puts herself unwittingly in danger.

Each book, we have the usual cast of characters that are all part of Lady Georgiana's life. We are also introduced to more and more characters. Her detailed descriptions bring each character to life. And Katherine Kellgren is, perhaps, the best narrator I've ever listened to. She has a voice for each character, the usuals, as well as, new ones. She seamlessly transitions from Cockney to Scottish, to English, to Irish, French and even Australian!

This series has, without a doubt, become my new obsession.

Very well narrated

The story was entertaining enough, and the narration really brought the many characters to life, so that they were all memorable.

Fun with royals and mystery!

My latest in this series is just as much fun as the first and all in-between. Royals, sassiness, murder, and just plain fun! If you've not read or listened to any of them, you REALLY don't know what you are missing! It's light and fun and you're gonna love the characters as much as the story!

Plot twist got me again!

I’ll keep it short and sweet. This series does not disappoint. Every book I think I’ve figured it out by the end, and there’s always an extra plot twist or two I never saw coming. I even read this thinking I had figured out one thing the entire time, only to realize it’s merely tangential to the main plot. Love the ride these books provide!

One of My Favourites in the Series

Would you consider the audio edition of Heirs and Graces to be better than the print version?

I have only ever listened to the audio versions of the series.

What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I find Katherine Kellgren a joy to listen to. She is that rare narrator that brings the magic out of the story.

Any additional comments?

I have listened to the entire series and though some have said there are some repetitive elements I can safely say each story in itself is a lot of fun.

Fantastic entry into the Lady Georgie series

Would you listen to Heirs and Graces again? Why?

The humor that runs throughout the book makes this a book I could listen to again even knowing who the murder is.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the interactions between the characters and the lead character. I also liked the development in Georgie and Darcy's relationship.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

The characters are very easy to tell apart and I loved the accents. Each character felt authentic.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed out lot several times while listening to this book.

Any additional comments?

The only negative was there wasn't enough of Georgie's grandfather. I loved the previous books when he was featured more prominently.
