    "Well balanced and gripping book"

I just couldn't stop listening! The plot unravels with all the usual twists and turns, not quite sure who the final culprit is. Great story line brilliant characters and all the usual demands on on DI Gilchrist. You can almost feel the sense of panic in the story and I found myself wanting Andy to win through!

Well narrated which adds to the overall feel of the book.

Go on buy it – you will not be disappointed!

    "So much gore"

The story was well told. I enjoyed the narrator better than the narrative which, for me had too much explicit detail, both of brutal happenings and sexual scenes - is Andy Gilchrist the "James Bond" of the Fife Constabulary?. However, if I gloss over those things, or if you like them, this was a good story, though I am not sure it lives up to the rave reviews I have seen to date. I will listen to the next one in the series as I feel that, all things considered, it could get better and I like Scottish detectives and Scotland.

    "Great story, well read"
Would you consider the audio edition of Hand for a Hand to be better than the print version?

I discovered T.F Muir through Audible and have only listened to the audiobook versions of his novels.

What other book might you compare Hand for a Hand to, and why?

I enjoyed the first one, An Eye for an Eye, and was not disappointed by the sequel. DI Gilchrist is deepening as a character and the relationship with his children and ex-wife is explored in more depth in this novel.

What about David Monteath’s performance did you like?

David Monteath gave an excellent performance, reading with great interpretation and believable accents.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's just as well that audiobooks are portable as I found myself listening at all available opportunities - while in the car, walking the dog, cooking etc.

    Any additional comments?

I don't think you need to have read/listened to the first one before getting this one as the stories are entirely separate and this doesn't refer in any way to the first book. I'll certainly be getting the next one.

"Another Gem of a Crime Thriller Series"

This is a gritty and well read series of thrillers set in St Andrews in the Kingdom of Fife. I managed The Russacks Hotel up there for just over a year and these thrillers bring back a number of memories. The stories are well written and have you on the edge of your seat at times. Twists and turns galore, you cannot help but get embroiled in the main character DCI Gilchrist and his oddball team and I am so glad I gave the series a try. I have now listened to the first 2 books and have just downloaded the 3rd. I am hooked !

    "Hand for a Hand"

Enjoyed this book even more than the 1st in the series.

So glad to have discovered T F Muir. The main character DCI Gilchrist is very believable and his relationship to his family is woven into the story very well.

What does David Monteath bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

    Story
"Brutal, but hard to care about characters."
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

    Characters I could empathise with.

What was most disappointing about T. F. Muir’s story?

The characters didnt act in a believeable way, for example: A mans girlfriend is murdered and he just drinks and watches football?

It is a middle aged mans fantasy, which made it a cringeworthy read - Hard man Gilchrist drinks heavily (it seems hes more concerned with having a pint than solving the case, rediculous concidering who it involves), speeds around in his midlife chrisis mobile, and has sex with his much younger female coworker - who fawns over him for some reason. She also feeds him fish and chips while hes speeding along in his Mercedes.

It also has the typical cop story cliche of tension between Gilchrist and his superiors.

There is also a key part of the plot which involves a laptop password, and a lot of prining, its pretty silly.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The performance was a bit hit and miss, sometimes it was spot on, but at others it became comical - sometimes robotic, or made characters sound like the were asking a question instead of stating a fact or opinion.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

There was a twist near the end which was interesting.

"I need a fifth book please."
What made the experience of listening to Hand for a Hand the most enjoyable?

Four books all of which I did not want to end.
Anger, frustration, fear, love, revulsion its all there but you feel its real!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Gilchrist without a doubt. A very human man with all the weaknesses but a man you could trust.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

There are a lot in each book.... But I think for me as a father finding his princess by the tower.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It pushed all my buttons and I can't wait until there is a book five.
