Publisher's summary

It started with the murder of Kinsey Millhone's sometime drinking buddy, an insurance claims adjuster. But before long Kinsey stumbles onto a massive insurance scam. Going undercover as a wisecracking vamp, Millhone descends into the Los Angeles nether world of machismo and gang hideouts. Her companion, terrified at having crossed the violent crook Raymond Maldonado, is Bibianna Diaz, no Girl Scout herself.

Critic reviews

"The eighth in Grafton's best-selling series is perhaps the wildest ride yet....Grafton's skill with dialogue, her vivid characterizations and California scenery are priceless....There are moments when the tension becomes so unbearable that you are tempted to skip paragraphs out of self-preservation." (USA Today)
"One of the best....A vivid, funny portrait of life in an ethnic underworld, viewed without judgment. Suspense there is, plentifully, and a final suggestion that Kinsey will be exploring different mischiefs next time. Outstanding." (Los Angeles Times)

I love Kinsey

I really don’t care what Kinsey is up to as long as Mary Peiffer is telling me the story. I’m actually going through the series a second time.

Good story

Mary Peiffer was a little more tolerable in this story. Her voice is so dispassionate that it’s hard to get involved with the character. The story is good and worth a listen.

Another great one!

The story was great! And yet again, Sue Grafton was awesome at delivering a completely different story than the rest of the series! Great characters including a few new ones. And the struggle for Kinsey with how she feels about Bibianna... she supposed to be the bad guy (in the beginning) but it's more complicated than that. Also, more interesting twists and turns throughout! Nicely done, Sue Grafton! And I love Mary Peiffer! I don't want to hear anyone else narrate this series! Her voice IS Kinsey Millhone! ❤ On to the next book!

Stands out as something different in the series

A good performance. This is a different Kinsey Milhone story in many ways - Kinsey is less responsible for decoding when and where she is at any given moment. The nature of the story gives Ms Grafton a chance to include some more extreme characters than in other books, but she still adds a lot of depth to them.

Sue Grafton can do no wrong!

This is it now, I am all caught up with the series - obviously all read out of order since this is “H” and the series is up to “W”.

I adore the Kinsey Milhone character so much; I am going to miss not having her around on a regular basis! I’m going from 23 instalments in 6 years, to a new instalment every 2 years.

Will be sad to reach the end.

Very Well Read, Nice Writing Style, Average Story

The writing style of Sue Grafton is really fun. The narration is very good. The narrator has a real knack for intonation and for comedic timing when appropriate. The weak point of the work is the story itself which is just OK. There are parts of the story that seem very unlikely. Speaking for myself, I am a Sue Grafton fan and just enjoy her style and to me that makes up for the mediocre story. I am reading all of her novels in order. However, read in a vacuum, this is just an OK story. Thank You...
