Publisher's summary

Invited to a Private View of the work of controversial artist Denzil Willoughby, the good citizens of Fethering are not quite sure what to expect. And it certainly turns out to be a lively affair, culminating in a confrontation between Willoughby and his ex-lover, followed by a heated argument with the gallery owner and a rival artist. But what no one could have anticipated was that the evening would end in sudden, violent death. While the police seem happy to accept an official verdict of suicide, Fethering residents Carole and Jude remain unconvinced. Deciding to investigate further, Carole and Jude soon discover that the answers lead only to more questions – and that at least one Fethering resident has a dark secret to hide.

Brett Never Disappoints

I have listened to and/or read every book written by Simon Brett. His plots are great, his descriptions vivid, especially when he narrates. A must read for every Mystery aficionado.

Story would be enjoyable from another narrator

What disappointed you about Guns in the Gallery?

Mostly the narration - it was terrible.

Would you recommend Guns in the Gallery to your friends? Why or why not?

Not unless it was read by Geoffrey Howard (the previous narrator) or someone equally good.

What didn’t you like about Simon Brett’s performance?

While he has a fitting British accent, he has no ability to differentiate between characters, and becomes very monotones. He does not bring the story to life.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The this story is as well crafted, and almost as much fun as most of the other 6 Feathering novels I have read, but I don’t think I’ll get any more unless the narration goes back to someone with more skill at it.

Good Story, Ending a Surprise!

It all unraveled a little too fast at the very end - a surprise perpetrator - seemed as if the other suspects were tumbling like dominoes - but Brett pulls it out with as satisfying epilogue.

I'm still enjoying the characters of Carol and Jude as they muddle along with a murder case they have taken it upon themselves to solve since the police are ready to call it suicide and close the case.

I appreciate that the books from Isis Publishing have a chapter point at the end of each chapter since I tend to fall asleep listening - that makes it easy to get back to where I left off.

Brett does a superb job of narrating his own books. Reliably good cozies - no one does it better!

never disappoints

The Fethering series is nice to follow - language and characters never vulgar! Simon Brett isn't the best reader, but a fabulous writer, in my opinion.

Narrator change from prior books in series :-(

I don’t care for Simon Brett’s narration. Loved the prior narrator in series. I hope one day they can be re-narrated

ugh

I love this series. But I prefer the prior narrator. Something has changed. The stories are rushed and now that the author is reading his own material he has a rushed impatient reading style. Oh well. sigh

More vulgar than usual

I usually really enjoy the Fethering series but this particular book was more vulgar than usual.

Poor narration.

Narrator is gasping for air as he reads; it is very distracting and annoying.

Cozy

Any additional comments?

More of the same - not highbrow reading or anything, but its fun to follow along with the Featherington crowd while doing the day to day...

Entertaining English village mystery:)

I have enjoyed this series! It's been my introduction to Simon Brett; I will definitely search for more Feathering mysteries. Also, great narration, which in my opinion, is rare when done by the author himself.
