Gun Shy: A Blanco County Mystery | [Ben Rehder]

Gun Shy: A Blanco County Mystery

The National Weapons Alliance is holding a rally in Blanco County, and it's being headlined by country music star Mitch Campbell. But Campbell's a fraud and someone's set to expose him. A humorous take on a touchy subject, Gun Shy is a sly lampoon of both sides of the gun debate.

    "A MUST for Mystery Lovers"

I have listened to oodles of audiobooks but this one is a DOOZY. If you like Carl Hiaasen's writing you're going to LOVE Ben Rehder. His characters are memorable and his story has twists and turns, and a few belly laughs, that will keep you glued to your ear phones. I had to explain to people around me what I found some dang funny. Give it a shot, you'll be glad you did

    "Blanco County series very entertaining"

I've listened to the two books in the series available through Audible, Guilt Trip and Gun Shy. The reader is excellent, with a voice well-suited to the Texas setting. The dialog is sharp and interesting. The characters are well-drawn and the mystery story in each is plausible and at times funny. Overall, the writing is very enjoyable and intelligent. I hope Audible has an unabridged version of, Holy Moly, Ben Rehder's most recent entry in the series, in the near future.

If you have roots in Texas, I know you'll enjoy this. If not, you will enjoy the humor. I look forward to more titles of Mr. Rehder's being available through Audible. You will laugh - even out loud. Enjoy!

"Poorly develped plot. Long boring sections."
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Persons who are of the anti-gun\anti-NRA\anti-patriotic mindset will enjoy this book.

What could Ben Rehder have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

He could have left out most of the didactc anti-National Weapons Alliance (National Rifle Association) diatribes. I found the lampooning of the NRA and the people of central Texas very offensive. Also, he could have developed a better plot and improved his characterization. He seems to have done so in his following two books, which were quite good (Holy Moly and Hog Heaven).

Would you be willing to try another one of Jonathan Davis’s performances?

Probably. But he did not capture the mood of the characters like Robert King Ross did in Holy Moly and Hog Heaven.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Gun Shy?

    The aforementioned diatribes.

    Any additional comments?

Rehder did somewhat try to balance the gun control issue, but it was a weak attempt. Instead of being a really good crime novel, it was more of treatise--no, not a treatise but a propaganda piece--stating the views of those who would eliminate fireams from the common citizen. A better developed plot would have helped this problem.

Mystery lover from waaaay back when.... Especially love those dark police/detective procedurals and the comic caper. I'm pretty tough as a reviewer. Writing must be smart and well-edited. Plots must be credible and a bit of twistiness and surprises are always welcome. Favorite authors [partial list]: Donald Westlake, Tana French, David Rosenfelt, Ruth Rendell, Ed McBain,

    "Intelligent and Sensitive Handling--Complex topic"

Ben Rehder has written a book that carefully tackles the gun control controversy with compassion, intelligence and even a bit of humor. I applaud him for his courage in taking this on, especially in light of recent (and ongoing) events in the US involving children and innocent people slain by guns in the wrong hands. Rehder does have a view on this matter but he does a pretty good job of not preaching. Instead, he shows what can happen when guns are in the right & wrong hands.

It is an excellent book and I'm looking forward to the next one in this series.

Narration is pretty good, although the narrator did seem to change the "voice" of one of the characters about mid-way through the book. The pacing kept me interested as the plot moves along.

My only criticism is that in this book, the protagonist has even less impact on how the plot unfolds.than in previous books. Although that is Rehder's style (events just collide with each other), I think the protagonist should be doing a bit more to solve the crimes.
