Publisher's Summary

Los Angeles D.A. Rachel Knight is a tenacious, wise-cracking, and fiercely intelligent prosecutor in the city's most elite division. When her colleague, Jake, is found dead at a grisly crime scene, Rachel is shaken to the core. She must take over his toughest case: the assault of a young woman from a prominent family.

But she can't stop herself from digging deeper into Jake's death, a decision that exposes a world of power and violence and will have her risking her reputation - and her life - to find the truth.

With her tremendous expertise in the nuances of L.A. courts and crime, and with a vibrant ensemble cast of characters, Marcia Clark combines intimate detail, riotous humor, and visceral action in a debut thriller that marks the launch of a major new figure on the crime-writing scene.

    "EXCELLENT!"

I'm usually willing to try out a new author's first offering, and this one is an absolute hit! Grabbed my attention with the first word and held it until the very last word. Ms. Clark has a smart, hip style of writing that is fun to read along with an excellent story line. I hope that she will continue putting out a couple of books a year that are as good as this one.

    "Enjoyable and entertaining"

I bought this because of the author's celebrity, not expecting a whole lot. I was delighted to listen to it. I would have given it a 4 1/2 if possible. I felt that the story was good, dialogue was snappy, and it had some flair. But I had the plot line before the end and it lacked the twist at the end which could have made me rate it a five.

I will buy the next one not for the author's name but for her talent. Nice job!

    "Pleasant Surprise"

Okay, I'll admit it. I bought the book solely because of the author's name, having no idea whether Marcia Clark could write a good book. She could. Good story - several twists - humour - mystery - insight into the legal system. I'd read another.

    "Guilt By Association"

I had read the non-friction of the O.J. Trial by Marcia Clark and enjoyed it so decided to try her fiction story. I enjoyed it and hope it becomes a series. Knight acted more like a cop in the story than a D.A. as the case was no where near ready for trial. Interesting story with lots of inside information and a tour guide of the L.A. area. January LaVoy did a great job in narrating the story.

    "Mixed Reviews"

This was a good tale, but was uneven. Clark introduces the various characters well. From the start there is a division between the case assigned that was supposed to be worked and the case she was forbidden to work. It goes back and forth at first. But then it seems Knight spends WAY too much time on the forbidden case and goes WAY out of line that she should have been caught. But at that point, the assigned case takes over. Good story but uneven.

The narration is as well. It bothers me when female narrators cannot do male voices well. It seems there is an overcompensation. Just use your regular voice.

For a debut novel, it was good enough that I will continue to read her other books.

    "DA or Cop?"

This is a well written and well narrated effort. The story is very plausible and current. However, the words and actions of the protagonist are much more like those I would expect from a cop than from a DA.. What kind of DA, even from the elite section of the DA's office, has the time this one does to do investigations such as are found in this book. And what DA thinks, when completely covered by a blanket, that something pushed against her neck feels like a snub-nose 44 magnum?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book but it would have worked better with the lead as a cop not a DA.

"Didn't love it, but I'll try again"

3 stars is a little generous, but it was better than a 2-star. I downloaded this book because Marcia Clark wrote it and that made me curious; it started off quite good! I have to say I was interested from the start.

After a while unfortunately, it just became tedious. I don’t give a bleep about what everyone is wearing all the time… (and incidentally, why is everyone “throwing on” their clothes? Can’t they just get dressed normally?) The clothing references (along with the hair, make-up, drinking, eating, and picking off other people’s plates references) just took up too much room and got on my nerves.

I also found the narrative over-described or over-explained, like I was forbidden to use my own imagination. It felt closed captioned!

Lastly I just didn’t appreciate the humour, it simply wasn’t that funny; if she was trying to achieve a Stephanie Plum vibe, she missed.

All these nitpicky things accumulated throughout the book and by the time I reached the end, I didn’t care whodunit anymore I just wanted to be done. Will I try another? Yes because this was her first attempt and so by default she’ll only get better.

    "A great listen"
What did you love best about Guilt by Association?

I thought I knew the ending somewhere in the middle but I was so wrong. The outcome was so left field.

Have you listened to any of January LaVoy’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The reader's performance was pheonomenal, she kept me very interested.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    yes

    Any additional comments?

I will definitely move on the more of the Marcia Clark series.

"I really wanted to like it"

Since this was the first book in a series I really hoped it would be good but I just couldn't stand it. It was tough getting through the whole book. Luckily it isn't a very long story. Rich people are bad and thugs are good. Really? The author went out of her way to make darn sure we know she isn't judgmental but at the risk of over doing the characters. I also don't like when female narrators do a low man's voice. The accents were ridiculous too. Ugh, glad it's over. Needless to say I won't be listening to the others in the series.
