Publisher's summary

The birth of their baby girl has filled Rina Lazarus and her husband, LAPD Homicide Detective Peter Decker, with joy mingled with sorrow, since complications have ensured that they can have no more children. But the situation is grim at the hospital, which has been devastated by severe budget cutbacks and staff shortages. And when a respected nurse vanishes along with a newborn from the nursery, Peter and Rina fear for the safety of their own precious child - especially when the missing nurse's car is found at the bottom of a cliff... with a corpse inside.

A most grievous sin has been committed. In pursuit of justice, Decker - with the help of his tough-as-nails partner, Marge, and an able assist from his teenage daughter, Cindy - follows a twisted path that winds through a sinister maze of hospital politics, misplaced passions, and torturous mind games that can all too easily lead to murder.

Solve another case with Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus.

Sorry

Faye Kellerman is usually so good. But this is one of her weaker books. Kind of gross. Couldn't finish it but will still listen to another and hope for the best!

DON'T KNOW.

Narrator reads like he's reading to a four year ol

What disappointed you about Grievous Sin?

This is actually a decent story line but the reader is ridiculously over expressive and reads like a kindergarten teacher to his class.

you get your money's worth

I bought this book using the $5.00 sale audible had going on and though I've read plenty of books worse I still have to give it a low rating but only due to the numerous characters that popped up out of nowhere. I guess being a detective novel i maybe should have expected that but so many different ones entered the story out of the blue that I got completely confused at times all the way to the very end. I kept asking myself what have I missed during the first few chapters to not undrestand how this character got involved and "who the heck are they anyway?" The narrator did a good job though.

Padding Galore

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Too much material that dragged the story out needlessly. A real bore and disappointment given Kellerman's reputation. It felt like someone had taken a short story and puffed it up until it could be sold as a novel.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not Kellerman!

What about Mitchell Greenberg???s performance did you like?

His articulation is excellent, as is his pacing. Too bad he didn't have better material to work with.

You didn???t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Concept was good, but the execution, in my opinion, turned it into a poor potboiler.

Slow …. Plodding….. Judgmental

What disappointed you about Grievous Sin?

Characters are not likeable or interesting.

What was most disappointing about Faye Kellerman’s story?

Book is full of unnecessary prejudice.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Accents were over exaggerated for characters that live in America, and gave the white detective a black voice.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Dissapointing

Any additional comments?

It was difficult to listen to this book. Book was too in-depth with the main characters boring family life cheesy, contrived and unbelievable. Book is full of unnecessary prejudice. Judgments of ‘crazy’ are handed out based on ‘over eating’. One Christian asking another if they want to pray is considered so inappropriate that this Christian action got the character labeled ‘crazy’ and it was mentioned as inappropriate 5 or 6 times. Yet the main character can’t eat a bag of chips if they are not kosher. These wacky judgmental character traits weakened the story line. And the detectives used these judgments to develop their list of suspects. Maybe some detectives are that shallow but it doesn’t work well in a novel. The Hispanic male character is portrayed as a total jerk with every negative stereotype ever attributed to Hispanic males. Awful I will not read another of hers.

Slow and tiring

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I can't think of any. It takes forever to really start, and Rina whining about not being able to have children is very tiring as she already has three.

Has Grievous Sin turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not in the genre, but in this series.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator did OK.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I was glad to see the main character had family values.

Any additional comments?

The detective's daughter was very annoying because she kept getting involved even when told not to. I guess it was supposed to be cute, but it wasn't.
