Graveyard Games | [Sheri Leigh]

Graveyard Games

Dusty has always been the hothead of the pair - her twin, Nick, he was the calm, cool, and collected one. But now Nick is dead, found murdered in their local cemetery, and Dusty, on forced leave from her job as a Chicago police officer, goes back to her childhood home to attend the funeral. It becomes quickly apparent to Dusty that the local authorities aren't being straight with her - or anyone else - about what's been going on in the little Midwestern town she grew up in.

Publisher's Summary

Dusty has always been the hothead of the pair - her twin, Nick, he was the calm, cool, and collected one. But now Nick is dead, found murdered in their local cemetery, and Dusty, on forced leave from her job as a Chicago police officer, goes back to her childhood home to attend the funeral. It becomes quickly apparent to Dusty that the local authorities aren't being straight with her - or anyone else - about what's been going on in the little Midwestern town she grew up in.

The detective in her kicks in and she decides to find out what - or who - has killed her brother, so she moves in temporarily with her father and stepmother, takes a job in a local bar, and starts asking questions. Her focus soon fixes on Shane, her brother's best friend - the town bad boy and bad seed. The tension between the two of them has always been palpable, and nothing has changed. Sparks fly as they collide, and while Dusty finds herself sinking in deeper with Shane, the mystery of what happened to her brother - and an ever growing list of victims - grows even sranger.

Dusty finds her past haunting her everywhere she goes as she continues to dig deeper into the circumstances of her brother's death, and her future looms large as her fate as a police officer is about to be determined back in Chicago. With everything coming to a head, she focuses on one thing: What happened the night her brother was killed in the cemetery? She's sure Shane knows...something...and she's determined to find out what it is, one way or another.

I am a voracious reader (average about 4-5 Audible books a week, in addition to those I "eyeball".) I have been hooked on recorded books since the time of cassettes/CDs and was thrilled when I became an Audible member in 2007. I find reader reviews good guides to spending my credits, so have finally decided to write a few (although, I would rather be reading!)

    "Blurb misleading"

I can usually get a good sense of a book from the blurb, but I was expecting a police procedural with a twist (namely, big city cop returns to hometown to solve mystery of her brother's death and proves herself to family/friends.) This read in some parts like a teenage angst book (and the memory scissors/ "snip" motif had me thinking there was a drinking game subtext.) The sharp transitions between some scenes (where they forgot the transition music) had me rewinding and checking the time stamp to make sure I didn't accidentally skip a passage. But, I have a tough time NOT finishing a book, so I kept diligently listening, hoping there would be a payoff at the end. The ending was certainly suspenseful, if exceptionally ludicrous, but completely different from what the blurb left me to expect. I read a great deal of Urban Fantasy (Mystery and SciFi/Fantasy are the 2 genres I read the most), but this book was too much an uneven mishmash of the genres (YA, mystery, UF with spot of soft erotica thrown in) that it left me feeling cheated. Also, the protagonist at the end seemed more like a squealing teenager than a big city cop and, had she not bemoaned the loss of her job for the first quarter of the book, I would have suspected she was a failed kindergarten teacher instead. I wish I had my credit back on this one.
