For ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, it's the beginning of his worst nightmare: a car abandoned on a desolate stretch of Oregon highway, engine running, purse on the driver's seat. And his estranged wife, Rainie Conner, gone, leaving no clue to her fate.
Did one of the ghosts from Rainie's troubled past finally catch up with her? Or could her disappearance be the result of one of the cases they'd been working, a particularly vicious double homicide or the possible abuse of a deeply disturbed child Rainie took too close to heart? Together with his daughter, FBI agent Kimberly Quincy, Pierce is battling the local authorities, racing against time, and frantically searching for answers to all the questions he's been afraid to ask.
One man knows what happened that night. Adopting the alias of a killer caught 80 years before, he has already contacted the press. His terms are clear: He wants money, he wants power, he wants celebrity. And if he doesn't get what he wants, Rainie will be gone for good.
Sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, it's still not enough.
As the clock winds down on a terrifying deadline, Pierce plunges headlong into the most desperate hunt of his life, into the shattering search for a killer, a lethal truth, and for the love of his life, who may forever be, gone.

I honestly can't tell you what I think of the content of the book, b/c for the entire listen, I was distracted by the narration. The narrator's voice is simply harsh and unpleasant -- that is, her "normal" reading voice. And then there are her male voices -- simply atrocious. She sounds like grade school kids trying to sound like men. Interestingly, the only sound she did well (eerily on-target)was a mechanical voice.
I hate to be so negative, but I had to force myself to listen to this book since I didn't want to waste the credit. The story earns 3 stars, best I can recall.
Pretty darn good little mystery-thriller -- Gardner is usually a good bet for a good "read" . Also Anna Fields does a wonderful job of narration but it's a little creepy listening to her read the part about a basement flooding (just too sad)
Since I already paid for it at some time in the future I intend to finish it. I only made it about an hr into the story before I found myself another book, Anna Fields just kills the whole story. Her voice doesn't change depending on who is speaking so I keep finding myself lost on what character is saying what. Some how a character from the west coast has a southern accent.
This is my second Lisa Gardner book, I enjoyed it. The story was interesting and i never expected the ending. The narrator is ok but didn't do the child voice so well. I would recommend this book if you like suspense.
Yes, if they're into thrillers. Lisa Gardner is always good.
Yes. It's not your typical story. This is not a feel good easy to listen to book. You have to actually pay attention. You have to think.
Love her.....all her stuff...always have. I hate knowing she will never be able to do new ones. Thanks Anna :)
No. Too long.
Gardner always writes great stories. They are funny, sad, dark, exciting..in a word complicated. You never know just how it's gonna end. She doesnt always leave you feeling happy. I like happy, that's why it did not get 5 stars.
REALLY GOOD BOOK-----
But should of read them in order.
You dont HAVE to read them in order BUT I really wish I would of.... I loved her books and would of probably loved them more had I read them in order.
Good solid suspense. I felt alot for the characters. Compelling from start to finish. I loved Anna Fields reading of the book.
I am a huge fan of Lisa Gardner, and this book didn't disappoint! It's easily one of my favorites, and I really enjoyed the narrator. I thought she did a great job with the different voices, and kept me engaged the whole time.
I haven't read all the other Quincy & Rainie books yet, but didn't feel that I missed out on anything by not knowing their entire backstories before reading this one.
