Publisher's summary

THE FIRST BODY IS A MYSTERY.
She's young. She's beautiful. And her corpse, laid out in the office of Boston medical examiner Cat Novak, betrays no secrets - except for a notebook clutched in one stiff hand, seven numbers scrawled inside.

THE NEXT BODY IS A WARNING.
When a second victim is discovered, Cat begins to fear that a serial killer is stalking the city streets: a shadowy madman without mercy or apparent motive. The police are sceptical. The mayor won't listen. And Cat's chief suspect is one of the city's most prominent citizens.

THE FINAL BODY...MIGHT BE HERS.
With the death toll rising, Cat races to expose a deadly conspiracy and the brutal killer at its heart - a killer who will stalk her from the dangerous streets of the inner city to the corridors of power. Because he's closer than she ever dreamt. And every move she makes could be her very last.

You Should Know...

I have not finished this book, and I admit it is not bad, but anyone who purchases it should be aware that this is not a new book. It is retitled from a book written in 1998 (I think--the author tells you at the beginning of the book).

It was written before the author moved into suspense, so it is basically a romance novel with some suspense.

There is no way of knowing this from the information available on Audible. I consider this rather unethical, as I was not looking for an old romance novel, but rather one of the excellent suspense novels that this author currently writes.

Like being stuck in an elevator

Oh my god! This was maybe the worst listen I've had so far. I had to quit after 90 minutes. The narrator had me grinding my teeth and thinking of elocution specialist hell - I doubt even a better reader could have saved the writing though. Just Plain Bad! I gave it one star because I wasn't given the option of zero....

Loved the story

Gerritsen was evolving to thriller suspense and this was her first! It is a rewrite with a different title. However, She did a great job with it and it was a great listen!

okay

I actually did not guess the bad guy, but it was pretty predictable. I wish I'd known before I bought the book that it's an old book, just repackaged. I wanted a brand new book, but at least I had not read it already.
Not the best, not the worst.

Great Book, Not Heavy Romance

Even Tess Gerritsen states that this was her cross over from "romance" to more of that medical mystery and I have to say that Girl Missing (aka Peggy Sue Got Murdered) was a great mystery and not heavy on romance. Yes there was enough of a romantic tug that I was happy and mad and excited but the story line had me more. I was surprised by the end and enjoyed the way that Gerritsen attempted to adapt the book to be "newer" it is funny though technology is so ever changing we can't ever be on top. I highly recommend this book and now have become a true Tess Gerritsen fan.

Early Tess!

Read for Review/Listened for Fun (Edelweiss/Audible)
Tracking Books Read Review (Short)
Overall Rating: 3.75
Story Rating: 4.00
Character Rating: 3.50

Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)

First Thought when Finished: I can see why Girl Missing is what Tess Gerritsen calls a "bridge" novel. The mystery was strong, there was a romance, but the characters are more along the lines of her more recent novels (takes awhile for you to warm up to them but when you like them they are fantastic).

Overall Thoughts: I really enjoyed reading Girl Missing. I knew that Tess had written romantic suspense in the past but had never tried them. Tess is a brilliant mystery writer and her case work is stellar. The methodical way she takes you step by step through solving the crime with the characters is a big reason she is one of my favorites. In Girl Missing, the case was super strong and fun to figure out. I wasn't a fan of the romance but also didn't think it distracted from the story. This is early Tess but still very good Tess!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Susan Ericksen / Length: 8 hrs and 10 mins

I am a fan of Susan's narration. She has a great tone for procedural books (she does the JD Robb series too) and strong/smart women are right up her alley. She did a very good job with Girl Missing!

Final Thoughts: I would recommend this to fans of Tess even if you aren't a fan of romance. It was a darn good case!

Just Okay

The story is fairly predictable and characters are forgettable. I’m a huge fan of Tess Gerritsen and we all need room to grow. Her later work is much better. The narrator (a relative of the author’s husband?) is good but has an odd accent that was distracting. Her portrayal of African American speech was such a caricature it made me cringe.

If you like Rizzoli & Isles

From the author of the Rizzoli & Isles books that are now a TV show as well, this is an older book reissued and updated. It has a nice intro and post book interview with Tess Gerritsen. Like Maura Isles, Cat Novak is a Medical Examiner in the northeast. Although that's about as much as they have in common. I really liked this herione and wish there were more Cat Novak book out there. This book has a little science, a little police action, and a little romance. A delightful afternoon read.
