Deputy coroner Mattie Winston knows everyone in the charmingly small town of Sorenson, Wisconsin - except the latest body discovered in a desolate field. If a woman this attractive had moved into town, the news would have surely hit the gossip mill in record time. So who was the murdered femme fatale? Whose knife was left planted in her chest? The mystery deepens when detective Steven Hurley takes one look at the body and turns as white as the newly fallen snow...and excuses himself from the case.
It'll take all of Mattie's forensic skills to unravel the increasingly bizarre clues and find the killer...before she herself becomes just another cold case in a frigid Midwest winter!

Likes: Cozy mysteries (cats a plus), personal memoirs, not too dark fantasy, books about the brain. Dislikes: Torture, animal cruelty.
I have been enjoying this series because I enjoy the characters particularly Mattie and Hurley, and Mattie makes me chuckle. In the first two books, the mysteries were perhaps not that well developed. In this book we move on to a much more complicated mystery which plays a bigger role in the book. I considered that a plus and I even listened up to 5 hours in one day to have it resolved. Also, I did not solve this one. That said though, I found the lack of romantic progress disappointing. In fact the developing romance has gone backwards instead of forward in this book. But I will definitely go on to the next one to see if it gets back on track! It's the same narrator as previous books and I really like her as Mattie but she does sometimes mispronounce words.
I enjoy the series.
The narrator needs to blow her nose! It drives me crazy.
third in an enjoyable series. interesting, clever stories without obvious denouement.
first she mispronounced numerous words. tomb for tome, heapa for hep-a, h. i. p. a. a. for "hipa". long editing pauses poorly placed. i liked the stories but could have just as easily been turned off at book 1.
smart marketing. the first couple chapters of the next book in the series at the end of the current one piqued my interest and i picked up all 4.
Like the series. Didn't really like the part of the book set in Illinois. Also wish narrator would learn to pronounce carotid. And several other words. Drives me nuts.
This is one of those great audio books that makes you laugh until you cry! It was a great mystery, a little romance & an awesome heroine! My husband & I listen to these stories while on the road...it's something we both enjoy. I definitely recommend this book.
Yes, kept me listening, intriguing. Enjoy all of her books.
No, just a good, enjoyable listen.
I enjoyed this book like I enjoyed the previous ones in this series. Mattie is realistic and likeable. Her romance/work relationship is realistic and tantalizing. I can't wait to read the next book.
Instead of keeping me guessing as to whodunnit, my brain just gave up. The story lost my interest, lost its sense of humor, and put Mattie in places with choices not consistent with the character established in the previous books. Instead of gaining in intensity, the romance is gaining in frustration. I'm losing hope as a listener. Wonder how Mattie handles it? Narrator needs to know she's not pronouncing some words correctly. Can be a bit frustrating especially when speaking terms learned in simple anatomy.
