Publisher's summary

In Fox Tracks, New York Times best-selling author Rita Mae Brown delivers another exciting episode in her popular foxhunting series. When Master of the Jefferson Hunt ''Sister'' Jane Arnold is confronted with two ominously similar deaths, she begins to suspect that the killings are linked - and part of a much larger plot. Voicing her opinion soon puts Jane's life in danger. Fortunately, she can turn to her four-legged friends - including horses Keepsake and Lafayette, and even the fox Aunt Netty - for help.

Brown does Virginia and hunting

Rita Mae does another wonderful job reading her Sister Jane books. Although I have all of her books in print, I only buy the Sister books in audio. This is because Rita Mae reads them herself. I sit back and luxure in the sound of home and enjoy the fact that no mispronounciations jar my ear. Also her emphasis of some phrases adds to my understanding of what attitude she is conveying. It is a lot of fun reading a book that takes place in an area you grew up in, wherever it may be.

Tally Ho!

Would you listen to Fox Tracks again? Why?

Oh yes, just love this series by Rita May Brown Love the backdrop of fox hunting, love the way the animals have a voice......

Who was your favorite character and why?

More than one, it's the animals, as they have voices, too.

Have you listened to any of Rita Mae Brown’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, she is good, better than most

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end, as it was unexpected, her plots have so many twists!

Any additional comments?

Can't wait for another in this series~keep them coming!

Great Story, Horrible Narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Yes, because her books are engaging and they never disappoint!

What did you like best about this story?

Good storyline, nice that she always finds way to weave in less-significant characters.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She needs to stick to writing. As a former teacher, I would have given kids poor scores and suggested they work on fluency for reading like this... pauses where no pause should be; mispronunciations (she actually said Larrilord, instead of Lorrilard, and she's the one who created the characters in the first place!); incorrect inflection; voice dropping in the middle of a sentence, and then not dropping at the end; questions that sound like statements; statements that sound like questions... not to mention her voice is just not pleasant. It's not bad for conversational speaking, but it is unpleasant for audio narration- somewhat harsh and rough around the edges. The prior book's narrator changed her voice according to the characters, and gave sister a wonderful southern drawl- not too much, but just enough so that you knew she was southern and you understood why men were still attracted to her. Rita Mae Brown makes sister sound like a battle-axe, rather than someone familiar with the refinements of southern culture... there's no difference in her voicing different characters either, which makes it hard to follow at times. The first few chapters were painful to listen to. My ears eventually adjusted, but every time I stopped and picked up later, that voice just grated and irritated until I readjusted. She is easily one of my favorite authors and I love, love her books— but seriously, someone else needs to narrate, because this is clearly not her gift.

Do you think Fox Tracks needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

There's already a follow-up, so this is kind of a moot question.

Any additional comments?

I love her books enough that I'll listen anyway, but if I had the option of choosing a different narrator, I absolutely would. Her narration detracts from the experience, and I find myself mentally correcting her lack of fluency and poor inflection.

Impossible to get through

What disappointed you about Fox Tracks?

The narration. I enjoyed these rather simplistic books when they had decent narrators. This author should NOT read her own books.

What do you think your next listen will be?

No more foxhunting mysteries, if Rita Mae Brown reads them.

What didn’t you like about Rita Mae Brown’s performance?

Everything. Timing was so bad, pauses where there shouldn't have been pauses.

What character would you cut from Fox Tracks?

Never got to character development

Any additional comments?

Totally a waste of money and time.

A Wild Ride!

Surprise ending, page turner, a solid “Sister” Jane home run. Interesting asides on natural history, fox hunting, current events, tobacco, and contraband support the narrative which continues to develop the Jefferson Hunt and surrounding community in the present and the past. On to the next in the series.

Run from this narrator

Would you be willing to try another one of Rita Mae Brown’s performances?

I would think that reading one's own book would be a slam dunk, but Ms. Brown sounds like she has never read a book out loud before and she needs a LOT more practice before she does it again. I gave up on the book 30 minutes into it.
