Can't even listen to it

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This book had great reviews...I was excited to try it out. Unfortunately, I was unable to listen to it due to the narrators voice. Wobbly, ready to cry female voice narration. Its exhausting to listen to the story because I think the narrator is going to start crying any minute. I tried to keep skipping ahead to push through the areas of the book the narrator considered sad....but she speaks in that voice the entire book!!!

Has Forgotten Secrets turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, just that narrator.

What didn’t you like about Lauren Ezzo’s performance?

Everything.

Feel good fiction

The only way to describe this alleged "Mystery/Thrilled" is as "feel good fiction" bordering on "chick lit". The whole story was offensively predictable; we knew how it was going to end as soon as it started. The love story was ridiculous, the characters were under-developed, and it was just hopeless. I don't know if the voice of the narrator added to the chick lit feel or not, but I think she might have just made it worse.

I fell mislead!

Audible classifies this book as mystery and thrillers, modern detective. It is chick-lit. The story is decent and there is intense suspense. I listened to the entire book in 3 days with interruptions for other books. Narration is quite good but the narrator has a tendency to over perform.

Great read and OK narration..

I can always tell when I really like a book, that’s when I’m at the half way through the book and I haven’t even skipped one page. I did like that the way Thayne and Riley got to know one another was through their talk on the phone every Friday night for a full year, not seeing each other, just talking on the phone, she lived in DC and he was in Wyoming. Until Thayne needed her expertise to find his kidnapped sister.

And, wow! What a twosome they made, and what a great love story. The twists and turns in Riley’s profile kept you guessing all the time. And when it all came together it was such a surprise. I would have never guessed that final outcome.

I really liked Thayne’s family: his dad, Carson, Gram and Pops, Hudson, Jackson, and Cheyenne. Riley’s parents were really awful. That’s all I can say without some major spoilers.

There wasn’t one itty-bitty show or feeling of sexual attraction or tension BUT there was a little bit of vanilla sex at about 90%. However, when the story is this good I don't mind the lack of sexual tension. There was the usual swearwords but nothing really important.

As to the narrator: Ms. Ezzo has gotten somewhat better. Her men are a little bit better but still need help not to sound so feminine. I listened to a couple of samples of her other books and had to pass on them because she was soooo bad at even trying to deepen to a manly voice but this one was better. Unfortunately, the worst voice she did was the hero’s. He sounded feminine through the entire book but I became used to it after quite a few pages. AND I thought I was in trouble when in the first 2% a “carotid (pronounced ka-ro-tid) artery” was mentioned and the Ms. Ezzo pronounced it CAR-TOID, tsk tsk. Overall, an OK job but it could still be better.

Predictable, boring, cheesy

This book was incredibly predictable. It was long, boring, and a bit cheesy. It had potential. But the content was common and familiar and repetitive.

Tedious, monotonous, dull

This novel was boring. This author lacked imagination in word usage and scene description. I'm bored to tears when the author is repetitive to make a point by using the same tired nouns, verbs, and adjective she did on the previous "page".

Just couldn't get past chapter one on this one

It might be unfair to condemn this book after such a brief listen, but the high, girlish voice of the narrator grated; not too offensive in the short sample I heard but after 15 minutes I wanted to scream. And within the first minute someone was holding a knife to a woman's "car-toid" artery. (Not sure whether this was author or narrator error, but somebody ought to have fixed this.) The sections of exposition about family history and why this guy is a deputy sheriff at all were just awkward. Hearing weapons and ammunition described in such a light, teenager-ish voice came across as pretty silly. They're not all winners, so I regretfully decided to move on to other audio books.

Painful

Pick a storyline. Is this a mystery or a romance novel? Because clearly you can't do both. The premise of the storyline is a decent one, but that's where it ended. If the author had stuck with just the storyline and kept the weird, someone random, romance out of it, I could've given it another star. But it was pretty painful to listen to.
