Publisher's summary

Bravery. Honor. Sacrifice. These are more than mere words to trained Marine sniper Nathan McBride. He’s never backed away from danger, and he’s not about to start now, even if it means confronting the cold-blooded interrogator who tortured him to the brink of death more than a decade ago.

When a mutilated body is discovered in a remote Utah lake, it ignites a chain of events that forces Nathan to face a dark chapter from a past he’s worked hard to forget. Could his Nicaraguan enemy be active again? On American soil? The evidence is clear, but the stakes are higher than Nathan can know. In a showdown that will test Nathan’s understanding of justice and mercy, he’ll have to make a life or death decision that has the potential to expose and destroy people at the highest levels of government.

Critic reviews

"An absolutely bone-chilling thriller. Equal parts Stephen Hunter and Thomas Harris. Imagine Bob Lee Swagger going after Hannibal Lecter and you will have only scratched the surface of this intensely exciting novel. Forced To Kill will haunt you long after you read its last brilliantly plotted page." (Brad Thor)

another great addition

Would you listen to Forced to Kill again? Why?

I'm on my second go around for this series. I love all the characters. Mr Peterson does such a great that they feel real and you can't help but care about them. His books are action packed and the details are in such depth that you never say huh.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Forced to Kill?

The lake scene when Nathan has to choose who and what he is. You can feel his struggles and the emotions

Which character – as performed by Dick Hill – was your favorite?

I think in this one I'd say Harv. I love Dick Hill. He does a great job. His female voices are a little weak but he's a guy what do you expect.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If life hadn't interrupted I would have. Glad I can take my tablet with me.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoy reading Andrew Peterson. I hope this turns into a long series.

Nathan's backstory, his torturer, and some twists!

Not all is as is seems, but evil is still evil. But maybe not as evil as you thought. Governments deal in convenience, and are often in bed with former enemies. Nathan's Nicaragua torturer is back and working in the US!

We get some backstory here, and a real sadistic torturer to hunt and hate. Nathan confronts and exorcises his demons (at least in part), and guess what is the most important thing in the world! No spoiler here; you should be able to guess, but gotta read the book.

Although Dick Hill reads to the last squeezed-out molecule of air, his voices are great and add depth to the relationship between Nathan and Harv that probably wouldn't come through in print. The Latino side-kick cliche is even discussed in the book, but you can't do better than Harv when you need someone on your six, or even your twelve. Harv is a hero himself after all.

The writing is thin, however, in the totality of these two men's lives. Every once in a while you are slapped in the face that Harv has a wife and 2 sons; what? I thought he and Nathan were inseparable buddies with no room for others. And Nathan has dogs, super well-trained dogs. When did that happen?

I wish Holly would stop gushing that Nathan isn't like anyone she's ever met before. Of course he isn't; everyone who went through half of what he did is dead. And I don't get what he sees in her. Sure, she's an FBI SAC, but she is not that strong a character.

This is a series I really like despite all my complaints, so there is still something there to grab you. There's good action, tough men, good men, and some redemption.

Teen Lovers

Struggle to finish. Too much sex and not enough of a story. Won't get sequel.

A good story almost ruined by over-acting

I think the story line was pretty good although it was a bit one dimensional with very few surprise twists. In the end the cliche "Love is stronger than hate" bumper-sticker meme was written in a way that it seemed pretty forced.

Usually when I dislike a book it's because the narration is flat. In this case, the narration is over-wrought and overdone. It made the final confrontation very hard to listen to because it seemed so over-the-top. I've heard this narrator in the Jack Reacher series and he was ok, but in this one it was a hard one to listen to. And he does Hispanic characters especially poorly in this one to the point it almost made me chuckle.

Liked the first one better, still a good buy.

A strong but at the same time frail and haunted hero. He feels like a real person, not just a unbeatable caricature. Very likeable "supporting" characters. And a chilling foe - one that actually makes this a disturbing read at times.

Story progression somewhat weak though. Still, if you want to get your adrenaline pumping, this is a well spent credit.

Another great installment.

The first book in a series is sometimes great, but then subsequent books begin to lose their steam. Not so with this series. I've enjoyed this installment as much as the first and believe the rest will not disappoint. Dick Hill is a stellar reader and adds much to the characters in this story. Looking forward to the rest! Happy Reading!

First time read

My first time listening to one of the author’s books. It held my attention and had many scenes that could be factual. Sometimes I could feel the pain. The author does well in the genre but could use more cliffhangers and plot twists. A good read that got me to pick 2 more to read.
