Publisher's summary

Bravery. Honor. Sacrifice. These are more than mere words to trained Marine sniper Nathan McBride. He’s never backed away from danger, and he’s not about to start now, even if it means confronting the cold-blooded interrogator who tortured him to the brink of death more than a decade ago.

When a mutilated body is discovered in a remote Utah lake, it ignites a chain of events that forces Nathan to face a dark chapter from a past he’s worked hard to forget. Could his Nicaraguan enemy be active again? On American soil? The evidence is clear, but the stakes are higher than Nathan can know. In a showdown that will test Nathan’s understanding of justice and mercy, he’ll have to make a life or death decision that has the potential to expose and destroy people at the highest levels of government.

Critic reviews

"An absolutely bone-chilling thriller. Equal parts Stephen Hunter and Thomas Harris. Imagine Bob Lee Swagger going after Hannibal Lecter and you will have only scratched the surface of this intensely exciting novel. Forced To Kill will haunt you long after you read its last brilliantly plotted page." (Brad Thor)

Very good read

Loved the story. Not for the squeamish though. Starting the third book now. Hope it is as good as the first two.

Average

The story was okay and made better by Dick Hill. A little more sadistic torture then I prefer, but a satisfying ending.

Awsome sequel!!!

As I quite liked the first book about Nathan McBride, I couldn't wait to get started on this one. I actually pushed back quite a lot of other books in my reading list to get going.

Nathan is still damaged goods, and still a very, very interesting main character. You get even more insight into the guy in this book, and you get more of the story just hinted about in the first book.

You also get to know the other characters better...and you get to meet a few new interesting people...and one baaaaaaaaad baddie.

This thriller is rather intense, so if you have a weak stomach this might not be for you. Tales of torture and sadism has a centre stage in this one...

If you like thrillers, the books about Nathan McBride should certainly occupy a place on your shelfs...recommended.

Great for walking!

I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed this author's first book, First to Kill. When I finished a walk, I would look forward to the next day, so that I could find out what happened next!
His descriptions were fluid and imaginative. His characters larger than life, but still flawed and fun. A great time!

Really good book

The Nathan McBride series is great. The two main characters are fantastic and I hope to hear more and sooner! The action and is all paced perfectly and while the plots do not twist a whole lot they are good ones.

What I like about this series is the line between the "good guys" and "bad guys" is hazy at best. It is up to you to decide if the character's actions are proper or not and the logic used in the book can be stomach turning if you believe these types of things happen in real life.

Another wild ride

I have been waiting for this to come out for months and was not disappointed. Nathan is one of those guys that you would want to have in your corner when the s--- goes down, and Dick Hill does a great job of narrating that reluctant ability to kick some enemy tail.

The story is well crafted, with a lot of great detail. I look forward to hearing the next in the series!

Long as you're not looking for literature here...

It's 90% a decent - albeit trashy - action novel, and 10% a bit too much psycho-babble story (at the end of the book).

Yes, yes, McBride had it tough and survived a horrible ordeal and his interrogator is a bad bad man... but... we don't need the sudden and unexpected addition of "The Other" tacked on at the end of the novel to spell this out to us. In fact. the 10% of whining-story at the end could have (and should have) been completely dropped... the plot ends when McBride catches the bad guy, but, for some reason, there are an additional 3 chapters that continue the story, even though there is no story in here to continue. Bad guy caught. Story done. Period. But Peterson took these extra chapters to explore McBride's psychological torture, PTSD, and even brought God into the story a little bit too... Thanks for the effort, but I don't need a sermon to wrap up my trashy action novel read.

The characters are a bit too old for the physical exertion required, women are female in name only (not distinguished from the men), and there is an uneven spread of details - at the start we get all sorts of details about helicopter specifications and weapon types but by the end of the novel, not much detail remained: "he was wearing a vest" or "his feet were bleeding". Seems like Peterson, err... petered out. Hah.

All that being said, it's a decent action novel and good as a bit of distraction on the deck. You probably won't be able to distinguish the story from any other trashy action novel, or want to read it again, but you won't throw it out before finishing it either.

The narration is good. There is minimal swearing, no sex and the violence is not gory or graphic. I have the next audiobook in the series, and will be reading it while I bask in the sun.
