New York Times best-selling author C. J. Box delivers a novel starring Joe Pickett’s sidekick: fan favorite Nate Romanowski.
In Force of Nature, trouble comes calling from Nate’s past in the Special Forces, and the colleague he once called a friend won’t stop until those who know a deadly secret are silenced. Everyone close to Nate is at risk, including Joe and his family. To save them, Nate will have to convince law-abiding Joe to finally break a few rules along the way.

If you're a fan of the Joe Pickett novels, this is the book you've been wanting and waiting to read since the first couple of books in this series. Finally, learn what Nate's big secret is all about. It was worth the wait, and now I'm even more intrigues by Nate, who lives to seek a 'pure but self designated' justice, and his good friend, Wyoming Game Warden, Joe Picket, who seeks justice through honor, loyalty, and the law.
Box writes his characters so realistically that they feel like good friends. His writes great characterizations while tackling interesting and relevant issues of the day. This is so much so that the real non-fiction book referred to in this novel is now on my to-read list!! Great writing plus a great story is a combination that can't be beat! Bring on the next in the series!!!!
OK, so Nate Romanowski is not the adult version of the child detective, and this is once again more of an adventure than a mystery! Nate is somewhat like a comic book superhero, but I liked the story nevertheless. The underlying motive for his adversary isn't revealed until rather late in the book, and the involvement of Joe Pickett and his family is somewhat peripheral and secondary. The narration was great, as usual, and the descriptions of the scenery and wildlife in Wyoming and nearby states are wonderful, as always. A good story.
I loved this as an audiobook because listening to the book made me slow down and savor all the beautiful descriptions of the mountains, wilderness, weather, etc. It makes you feel like you are right there. When reading a print book I sometimes read too fast and skim over the descriptions.
I love the setting (western mountains and wilderness) and the action was non-stop.
I finished this book in 3 days. It's excellent. If only Mr Box could crank these out More often!
This one kept me on the edge of my seat more than any other Pickett book.
Yes I have enjoyed all of the Joe Pickett books, but if they continue with the same storyline as this book I will probably stop reading C J Box.
Nate has been sold out in order to make him fit the mold of sex for the sake of sex you find in most books. He use to have a code he lived up to ,but now he is just like everyone else BORING . I am so disappointed with the direction this story line took.
Just pick a star............they are interchangable....
List of favorite books: Woodcutter - Reginald Hill, Consent to Kill, First Deadly Sin - Lawrence Sanders, Sniper Elite - Scott McEwen
Or David Chandler... I hate when someone over does a Super gruff voice for a tough guy - As I do for a high pitched girl. I grinded through one part of the book because I wanted to give it my all + 10 minutes of the second. It had a promising story line - But I didn't like the main characters at all. Maybe if I read it - I would have liked a little more - But I'm not entirely sure. The reader was slow and his voice was not engaging. Don't hate me - But it seems like a book for an older generation that likes it a little bit of rough..I might also understand why it might appeal to female readers. That's not sexist - That's sensitivity I'm talking about. It's returnable - That's how much I didn't like it. I'll take a look - but I have bought quite a few books & this might be number 4 that I am returning.
I don't know about you, but why are there so so so many 5 star reviews. I LOVE books, but so few are 5 star.
Enjoyable listen, template type mystery. Worth the credit if you like the tough hero type with lots of gun play and bad guys.
I felt it was worth the credit, but not anything outstanding.
NO, just realizing that someone didn't edit this book before it went to press.
Author did not keep our hero above the secondary hero/friend. Hero would answer like he was numb to current happenings, not an experienced, well-rounded, family-man cop. No cop would act like this.
The first CD had three different people, while being introduced, who "chortled." This really got to me. Hello author? There are other words to use from different people in the first introduction to characters? (try "laughed, giggled, grinned, chuckled, twitter, titter, snigger, smiled, was amused") I was really about done at that point; then thought I would overlook the "chortling" just to see if author was worthy, and Mayyyy beeee we'd have a new good series. A few things can be overlooked for want of a good series, etc, but this stuff is just too dumb. Author has not spent any time with real cops; and if he did he is numb not to see they are different than others in trust issues, ways of thinking, ways of protection, etc. duh. Another example: Author states that the secondary hero wanted to tell his secret experience several times to several people, and no one wanted to listen, while at the same time author is explaining how he kept himself hidden and secure in living out in the wilderness because of his past. Hello again? A "covert" experienced person does not share his experiences, but IF, per-chance someone really did want to share (unthinkable anyway) -- but if so -- who in their right mind would not want to hear it all? Everyone would want to hear the stories. And...I already figured out immediately who would be the bad guy plant revealed later in the book. Can't even get to the third disc. Too painful."No can do" any more... not a good author, in spite of cowboy hat and good looks, and from Wyoming. ha
It is one of my top 10 favorites. C.J. Box truly has a knack for keeping you intrigued.
I love listening to Nate talk. David Chandler gives him real character.
