Publisher's summary

Sunshine State trivia buff Serge A. Storms loves eliminating jerks and pests. His drug-addled partner Coleman loves cartoons. Hot stripper Sharon Rhodes loves cocaine, especially when purchased with rich dead men's money. On the other hand, there's Sean and David, who love fishing and are kind to animals - and who are about to cross paths with a suitcase filled with $5 million in stolen insurance money. Serge wants the suitcase. Sharon wants the suitcase. Coleman wants more drugs... and the suitcase. In the meantime, there's murder by gun, Space Shuttle, Barbie doll, and Levi's 501s. In other words, welcome to Tim Dorsey's Florida - where nobody gets out unscathed and untanned!

Brilliantly Disturbing

Some books need to be heard, not read. George Wilson made this book a treat to listen to with his deadpan, nature documentary delivery punctuated by Serge’s Cliff Clavin-like recitation of Florida trivia. Bring on the next one!

I love Serge and Coleman.

SPOILER ALERT: I can't believe Mr. Dorsey would have an important character such as Coleman killed in the first book. I hope it's all a tragic mistake and maybe it wasn't Coleman in the room at the Pelican Inn.

What a great story! Funny as all get out and told in such an entertaining and delightful fashion.

Less than I'd hoped for

I heard great things about Dorsey's books and started with this one which left me disappointed. So many characters are introduced for no apparent reason, a long series of disjointed and implausible plot lines, and the humor fell flat for me at least. Part of this could be due to poor narration (or perhaps poor editing). One can hear the narrator taking long breaths, clearing his throat, (maybe sipping on a drink?) etc and the reading is flat. But I'm willing to give this author a second chance and have already begun another more recent work with a different narrator. I like the concept and the Florida setting. Who knows? Maybe the series gets better.

My kind of story

Brilliant writing. Clever in the style of Seinfeld. I will continue with the entire series.

Serge is insanity

Tim Dorsey delivers one crazy drug fueled romp through Florida. this story was insane, whitty, sharp, and morbidly creative. with wit that rivels the late great Douglas Adams Florida Roadkill tells the tale of Serge Storms the human embodiment of insanity it's self. Serge and a bizarre cast of charictors each with thier own story all up intertwined together in a mis-adventure that swindles an insurance company and causes a chain reaction of death and murder. the last man standed claims the prize. the story was humorous but slightly disjointed which sometimes caused my mind to wonder and i would have to rewind because i missed key story points. i did enjoy that the reader sounded like Walter Cronkite so the whole adventure sounded like a news report which sort of added to this crime comedy.

Humorous but disjointed

Filled with funny characters but the book felt disjointed and hard to follow at times. I felt that the back stories of the characters took too long to explain. I rarely skip ahead in books be it audio or reading them but I did on this and felt I didn't miss much. The performance was excellent and that may be what kept me listening.

Hunter Thompson-esque

Loved it! Very Fear and Loathing vibe with Hiassen like absurdity. Killer's tour of South Florida. Glad the turtle survived.
