When a cop's body is found burned and decapitated, the last thing Andy Carpenter expected is for a stranger to waltz into his office and admit to the crime. For the wise-cracking millionaire defense attorney suffering from "lawyer's block", the case looks like a no-brainer...until the cops pick up another suspect: Andy's lead P.I., Laurie Collins, who happens to be the love of his life.
Soon Laurie's facing conviction for the grisly murder and Andy must desperately try to save her. All he had wanted was a case to sink his teeth into. Now he gets one that's a kick in the head - and the heart.
Crack another case with Andy Carpenter.

"Rosenfelt should win a unanimous verdict: first-rate." (Publishers Weekly)
"As satisfying as the nuts and bolts of the case are, it's the sheer likability of Andy and the odd assortment of his friends and staff that lifts the story from merely enjoyable to genuinely delightful." (Publishers Weekly)
Mystery, love interest, humor, and dogs - what more could you want? Fast-paced and well narrated, this may become my go-to series for light entertainment.
Rosenfelt has a pretty good story to tell based on cover-ups, lying government agents, and Vietnam special forces! But, if you're going to get this big with the characters, you should spend more time on the impacts to the story. The "unabridged" story reads more like an "abridged" novel as the wide array of characters and bad guys get short stroked in the end. But, an enjoyable read despite its overabundence of turn-of-phrase and satiracle style quips. Grover Gardner is a perfect match for the type of humor Rosenfelt weaves.
It's always a pleasure to listen to Grover Gardener reading David Rosenfelt's work. Gardener completely captures the "North Jersey" accent and tempo reflected in Rosenfelt's Andy Carpenter series, and Rosenfelt's stories are always the perfect mix of humor, mystery, and heart. I listen to a wide variety of books, but I always come back to Rosenfelt, Gardener, and Andy Carpenter (and Tara!) when I just want to listen to something I *know* I'll enjoy.
Engaging, enjoyable and fun!
Honestly I enjoy the humor in the Andy Carpenter throughout books the most rather than pointing to a particular scene or moment.
The Andy Carpenter books are all first person so Grover Gardner has become Andy Carpenter to me. I can't imagine anyone else as his voice and he reads the books with an easy confidence that makes it seem he's sitting right next to you.
These humorous mysteries are not really
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have all of the Carpenter books. I always eagerly anticipate listening to the book and am usually sad that the book has to come to an end. I've just about finished the series and It'll be tough to have to wait for the author to write the next one!
Combine a tense and suspenseful plot with characters to whom you get very attached and add a good dollop of humor and you have a great read! This makes my Summer Reading list, but I'll re-read it all year. It's a wonderfully confusing mix with Laurie framed for murder and Andy coming to the rescue and Tara never doubting either of them for a moment.
Don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Trip's cool though. Use Audible to make gym-training sane... And rip my imagination.
I try not to use the word, "WOW!" So I'm plucking it out of the bag, blowing off the dust and hurling it at you. Now I cannot imagine Rosenfelt NOT BEING HEARD WITHOUT GARDNER! But... but... Andy Carpenter belongs to Rosenfelt and his super smart narrative glimmers. The plot's bullet perfect. And every character in this courtroom ensemble belongs. I'm off to purchase the next Rosenfelt novel to hear his new flow of ideas and feel them through, I hope, Gardner's interpretation.
This book cannot be better in print or video. IT ROCKS in audible and why I listen to books. WOW!
David Rosenfelt really knows how to draw you into a mystery. Not only that, he can really make you laugh out loud. I've listened to three books in this series so far. this is one of my favorites. Some one complained about the narrator. I've listened to Grover Gardner narrate several book, in this one he's using a New Jersey accent and does it perfect. ( even though I live in NY now my family is from Jersey ) when he narrates other books he really has a different voice. Mr Gardner is one of my favorite narrators. I say to anyone thinking of purchasing a book to listen to the free "listen" that audible offers. It gives you a taste of the narrator. Many times I find the story it self can get you past a narrator who is not as good as some, and it is the words that captivate. the reader. Can't wait to read the next.....
Noah writes and daydreams for the pure joy of transposing his thoughts to the written word. His adventures & dog Dusty are his escape!
This second Andy Carpenter novel seamlessly continues where the first left off with a great cast of characters and a few new ones who work into the plot well. I look forward to the next one.
Only Grover Gardner made this worth while. As for the plot; the bad guys are ex Green Berets, cops, and FBI agents. The good guys are two women protecting truth, justice and the American Way and a wise cracking lawyer who loves stray dogs. Wildly original !!!
All mysteries all the time, that's what I read. I joined Audible when I started having a long commute. Now I listen everywhere!
I LOVE Andy, I LOVE Tara...I would love to spend a lot of time with either or both of them. Laugh-out-loud funny--getting weird (or envious?) looks from fellow freeway drivers--certainly makes a horrible commute much more fun.
