What the Critics Say

"In the sixth Kurt Wallander book to appear in English, Mankell proves once again that spending time with a glum police inspector in chilly Sweden can be quite thrilling." (Publishers Weekly)

    "Good but not my favorite"

I am a big fan of Henning Mankell. I liked this story but it was not my favorite of his. The story is a typical Mankell crime story with seeming disparate events that are tied up in the end. The cast of characters continue to be well developed but for some reason I felt like the story was less cohesive than some of his others have been. I will continue to listen to his stories though and would encourage others to give him a try if they haven't already.

    "Dreadfully dragged out and dull"

Mankell grossly failed to impress. The story falls flat. The overall plot dull. A real struggle to get from beginning to end.

    "Great story, poorly read."

The story is worth the price of admission, even with the poor performance of the reader. A middle aged detective at the peak of his career comes off more like a tired, 65 year old police officer with Dick Hill's narration.

Nevertheless, the plot is fast paced and the story is riveting.

    "Review"

This is an excellent book, well worked together characters and a good timeline. The theam is right out of today. I would read or listen to most of this author. Now come the bad part, it was an excellent tale almost ruined by the reader. It seem like a first time effort and someone told him you, must, pronounce, each, word, clealy. When he got to pronouncing names of characters it got to the point of grating on the nerves one example martinson would be mar, tin Soon. I will never pick anothe book with this reader

    "Another Great Wallander Adventure"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I am a huge fan of Mankell's Wallander series and would recommend this book to all who love police procedurals.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot was classic Mankell -- complex and mystifying until Wallander walks you through the investigation, uncovering leads and introducing additional personal strife.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The ending was one of Mankell's best for reasons I will not divulge!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes!

    Any additional comments?

As grouchy and grumpy as Wallander is, I always find myself hoping that this dedicated detective will find some kind of happiness! Just want to add that Dick Hill is an amazing reader.

    "I LOVED IT!"
Would you listen to Firewall again? Why?

Maybe, but this is the Mankell novel and I am listing to more now.

Which character – as performed by Dick Hill – was your favorite?

Wallander. I think Dick Hill did a good job on all of the characters.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I laughed sometimes. Mankell is such a great writer.

    Any additional comments?

Mankell was recommended to me by a co-worker. I'm hooked and will continue to purchase his books on Audible. I have a two-hour bus/ferry/bus commute to work, sometimes longer on the way home, and Audible books are PERFECT.

    "Another Good Wallender Tale"

Enjoyed this maybe a little more at the beginning than the end, but Wallender is always a fun listen and the characters fascinating. i had no problems with the reader but thought the plot a little weak and far-fetched. I've now read almost all the Wallender stories and hope a new one will be coming soon.

my expectations-- tense, moving, worrisome, and- rewarding-- this is Mankell at his best,
and I have learned to love not only the author and the stories-- but-- the narrator-

    "Great story - awful narration"

This is a great drama and Wallander is a fascinating character. However, this was tough for me to get through due to the narration. The narrator is robotic and probably more suited to non-fiction. As the other reviewers have mentioned, he over-annunciates every word and speaks random words painfully slow. I found myself so distracted by his odd diction that I would miss the actual story. This is disappointing as I was very excited to find the Wallander books on audio. I can only hope that they are not all by this narrator.

    "Solid Entry in Wallander Series"

This is a good, solid entry in the Kurt Wallender series. Although I disagreed with the narrator's pronounciation of Wallander's last name (mildly annoying), I still enjoyed it.
