Publisher's Summary

After Will Harper, a bomb-squad officer for the NYPD, is injured in the field, he retires early. But when his former partner is blown up, along with a paranoid best-selling author and his Florida estate, Harper's idle days are over.

Suddenly Harper is tracking a serial killer who is as expert in explosives as any terrorist, and not too shy about selecting targets at the center of the celebrity spotlight. With a former partner and a resurrected dead case file, Harper seeks out help from the FBI, but not from their most inside agents. He chooses an African-American woman, whose gender and race put her on the outside of the political career track, but whose savvy and creative thinking make her the perfect ally to bring in the Celebrity Bomber.

This is a fast-paced, gritty suspense novel guaranteed to keep listeners on the edge of their seats.

    "What a Shame"

The authors do a fantastic job, writing a spellbinding, riveting book about bomb diffusion; tick tick goes the second hand on the clock; thump thump goes my my heart, expecting boom, maybe not. Something was bothering me about the listen, though, but I couldn't figure out what it was. Then, I pulled into my garage, shut off the engine, and continued to listen in the dark. There it was! A television, playing a sports program in the narrator's background; continuous, nonstop hollering - coming from another room! How on earth did that get by editing? Since I knew what caused the aggravation, I figured I just wouldn't listen in quiet surroundings. So, I'm driving to work this morning, and got back into it. The narrator totally changed the recording tone in mid sentence! Is there no end to his nonsense? I'll continue to listen, of course, because I've paid money for the thing, and the story line really is good. We shall see.

"Excellent narration, thrilling story, but ..."

4 stars for the narrator and thrilling insight into bombing business. The most believable character was the negative one, also Harper & his job is nicely pictured. It's more difficult to believe that FBI officer can be so stupid to repeat the same mistake again and again, but the weakest point is the studied psychologist, who can read the mind of unknown bomber, but can't make a case and find arguments when talking to FBI agent.
Anyway, still excellent thriller, I was looking forward to drive to the office and back home, just to enjoy the listening in the car.

    "Suspense & Characters"

Characters are well developed; the story unfolds with a suspenseful but not overly contrived tale. I enjoy stories with a time sensitive element of cat and mouse between a relatively capable yet realistically flawed "good" guy and "bad" guy. Not every situation turns out the way the main characters expected. The good team does get a few amaizing breaks though...

    "Horrible production"
What disappointed you about Final Seconds?

The audio production is absolutely awful!

    Any additional comments?

It's a real shame when you have a good story and good narration ruined by terrible production - underlying background noise and conversation, sudden sound quality changes, sections of irritatingly bad sound quality.

"So very good...and so very bad!"

I absolutely enjoyed this story and was compelled to keep listening. I found it to be well written and I enjoyed the story very much. John Lutz books are some of my favorites.

I have over 250 books in my audible library. I love to listen to books, some I have enjoyed immensely and others not so much. While I absolutely enjoyed this story and the reader, this is the worst recording quality I have in my library. The background noises, skips, silences, and echo are distracting at best. What a terrible recording quality to inflict on a fine book!

    "I agree, It's a Shame"

I agree with a previous reviewer that the end product of this offering is a shame. The story is solid, but the recording quality is not up to Audible standards. Not professional at all with mid-sentence tone, volume and speed changes. I discounted the review because others said that it was a great story, but if I had to do it over again, I think I would pass. Definitely a shame.

    "Bad recording quality, bad reader"

Recording quality is all over the map, when cut to new session voice tone and clarity varies dramatically. The reader pauses so long between sentences, all dramatic effect is lost. Decent story ruined by bad quality.

"Good Listen, Well Worth The Credit"

Interesting characters, Harper was easy to like and a very worthwhile hero. There were times when I felt that the actions of some of the characters were not believable, no one could be as stupid as the FBI agent, and it was a bit difficult to believe that the victims would ignore such obvious threats, however it played out well and was very enjoyable to listen to.

"Good story but a couple of problems"

Just getting acquainted with Lutz and I really enjoyed the story. The problem came in the audio. I listened to a reasonable sound level and suddenly the volumn would change. Think it happened three times. Also, there was background noise like old cells when other conversations could be heard in the background.

But I believe this was done in 1998 which may account for some of the distractions. I'd still recommend the listen.

    "nail bitting"
What did you like most about Final Seconds?

The story was more important than the "heros" From the very beginning the bombs were the story. The fact that the authorities did not accept the possibility there was a link to the bombings and two middle aged men were the ones who had to solve the problem was fun.

Have you listened to any of Barrett Whitener’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This was my first time listening to one of Mr Whitenenr's narrations, He was excellent, I particularly liked his portrayal of the disgraced FBI profiler, his excitement his insistence that everything must be dropped and his theories attended to now, comes across vefry well. I could visualise him almost jumping up and down in his excitement

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Alas yes, it was really hard to switch off and go to sleep. Indeed I would discourage anyone from listening this in bed, the temptation to" listen just 5 minutes more" is fatal.!

    Any additional comments?

This is a really good book, fast paced, with just the right amount of intrigue to keep the listener on edge. I really enjoyed it. This was my introduction the these authors, I look forward to listening to more of their work
