Publisher's summary

At the old family manse in Louisiana, Special Agent Pendergast is putting to rest long-ignored possessions reminiscent of his wife Helen's tragic death, only to make a stunning - and dreadful - discovery. Helen had been mauled by an unusually large and vicious lion while they were big game hunting in Africa. But now, Pendergast learns that her rifle - her only protection from the beast - had been deliberately loaded with blanks. Who could have wanted Helen dead...and why?

With Lieutenant Vincent D'Agosta's assistance, Pendergast embarks on a quest to uncover the mystery of his wife's murder. It is a journey that sends him deep into her past where he learns much that Helen herself had wished to keep hidden. Helen Pendergast had nursed a secret obsession with the famed naturalist-painter John James Audubon, in particular a long-lost painting of his known as the Black Frame.

As Pendergast probes more deeply into the riddle - the answer to which is revealed in a night of shocking violence, deep in the Louisiana bayou - he finds himself faced with an even greater question: who was the woman he married?

Critic reviews

"Once again, the bestselling authors show they have few peers at creating taut scenes of suspense. Their restraint in the book's early sections make the payoffs all the more compelling." ( Publishers Weekly)

Candy

I’m totally hooked on the Pendergast Series!! I have skipped two of the books in the series and will go back to them later! I think Pendergast is like Constance (sp?) I wish Scott Brick was the narrator tho!! He’s much better and gets excitement in his voice that really get me excited too!!

Not bad

Great Performance. I didn't like the authors' treatment of female characters. . Story was interesting, but predictable.

some twists you see, others you don't

Once again Preston and Child do a good job developing their characters and drawing you in. Early on you think you know what's going on and then they twist it again... and again. Rene Auberjonois has become one of my favorite narrators on Audible.

Not my favorite

I don’t know why I’m so hooked on this series and this is the first one I didn’t like as much. It was interesting to go back in time in Pendergast’s life but some of the scenes were over the top. Usually when this happens it involves strange creatures. This time it was just annoying people.

Excellent reading

This is one of the very best books I've experienced. If there were more than five stars I would have gladly given them. The narration was outstanding. The story had me right there with the characters. I was absolutely mesmerized. Can not wait to sink my teeth into the sequel.

Unfinished

This book in the series ends unfinished. The story was good though. On to the next.

Ending?

Interesting book, a bit of a super human, Jason Bourne type main character. With just about the same amount of personality. Without giving too much away, what's up with the ending?! Way to carry us to a destination and then drop us off in a confused lump.
