Publisher's summary

My name is Dr. Adeline Glen. Due to a genetic condition, I can’t feel pain. I never have. I never will.

The last thing Boston Detective D. D. Warren remembers is walking the crime scene after dark. Then, a creaking floorboard, a low voice crooning in her ear… She is later told she managed to discharge her weapon three times. All she knows is that she is seriously injured, unable to move her left arm, unable to return to work.

My sister is Shana Day, a notorious murderer who first killed at fourteen. Incarcerated for thirty years, she has now murdered more people while in prison than she did as a free woman.

Six weeks later, a second woman is discovered murdered in her own bed, her room containing the same calling cards from a previous crime scene: A bottle of champagne and a single red rose. The only person who may have seen the killer: Detective D. D. Warren, who still can’t lift her child, load her gun, or recall a single detail from the night that may have cost her everything.

Our father was Harry Day, an infamous serial killer who buried young women beneath the floor of our home. He has been dead for forty years. Except the Rose Killer knows things about my father he shouldn’t. My sister claims she can help catch him. I think just because I can’t feel pain doesn’t mean my family can’t hurt me.

D.D. may not be back on the job, but she is back on the hunt. Because the Rose Killer isn’t just targeting lone women, he is targeting D.D. And D.D. knows there is only one way to take him down: Fear nothing.

Engaging story, not my favorite Lisa Gardner book

What made the experience of listening to Fear Nothing the most enjoyable?

The manner in which the story lines came together, gradually revealing the illuminating details of the characters. It was intriguing to see Detective Warren in a role where she was vulnerable.

What other book might you compare Fear Nothing to and why?

It has just whetted my appetite for more Lisa Gardner books, particularly those in the Detective D. D. Warren series. The particulars described in the book; i.e., women's correctional facilities, post-mortem mutilation, were interesting in the context of the story, but haven't spurred me to learn more about them.

Have you listened to any of Kirsten Potter’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Kirsten Potter performed other books in the Detective D. D. Warren series and her performance greatly added to my interest, as it did in this book. She captures the characters beautifully.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I thought the interviews about the foster care and old neighborhood were the most moving parts of the story. Also, the statement by the woman who described conditions in the correctional facility was very moving.

Any additional comments?

There were a few details I would quibble with in this book. In the early part of the story, Detective Warren is in so much pain she is barely able to get through the day. By the end of the story - chronologically, just a few days on, her pain is barely given any mention. I found this inconsistency to be distracting. Also, apparently Detective Warren was on suspension throughout most of the story, yet this did not cause her any difficulties when the investigation was ongoing. Finally, so much emphasis was given to the Day sisters, that Detective Warren's part faded away. In Live to Tell and The Neighbor, the story lines were more balanced. It was a great book, just not one of my favorites.

wonderful!

You'd think the song that would stick in my head was rock a bye baby, but no, it was the theme song to Winnie the Pooh.

Another knock your socks off book by Lisa Gardner!!!!!

Be warned, Spoilers coming!!!!

This was a fantastic listen!!! Lisa Gardner really has a knack for grabbing your attention right from the beginning. I was unable to stop listening. I was so into this story that I actually got mad when I killed my Bluetooth earbuds and had to quit in order to recharge them. I highly recommend this book. It is worth the credit or purchasing it.

Spoilers Ahead!!!!!

Absolutely enthralling!

I always thought I could be a good writer but this lady is phenomenal! The mystery in the entire story, The clear connections and detail of the storyline, the complexity of the characters. In all truth, I read two future books, then went backwards to book one and have progressed forward. This is better than some of her future publications! Thank you for a wonderful read!

I liked this, but...

So, there were parts of this book I really loved. I loved that DD was weakened by something. She was far more vulnerable in this book, and it worked. I also personally identified with her journey, because I too fell down a flight of stairs. The pain management techniques in this book actually helped me quite a bit.

But the misrepresentation of CIPA really bothered me. The most common distinctioom

Very violent descriptions

I love all Gardner’s DD Warren books but this was my least favorite because there was too much graphic descriptions that were disturbing. Kristen Potter was excellent as usual. I’m glad I got this in a 2 for 1 sale.

Ok that one was twisted!

I liked this one a lot. DD’s injury storyline made it all the more captivating but WOW! Definitely one of Lisa’s better ones, though I like a good many of her book!

Excellent

Classic Lisa Gardner, you don’t know whats around the next corner. Informative and entertaining, learning about a disease where pain doesn’t register at all and pain therapies that allow sufferers a healthy alternative to opioids. Heartwarming (and a bit creepy) seeing the interaction between 2 sisters who grew up separately and in very different circumstances. Thanks for the moments with the indomitable Dede getting her comeuppance from “Melvin”.
