Publisher's summary

Bart Minnock, founder of the computer gaming giant U-Play, enters his private playroom, and eagerly can’t wait to lose himself in an imaginary world, to play the role of a sword-wielding warrior king, in his company’s latest top-secret project, Fantastical.

The next morning, he is found in the same locked room, in a pool of blood, his head separated from his body. It is the most puzzling case Eve Dallas has ever faced, and it is not a game.

Lt. Eve Dallas is having as much trouble figuring out how Bart Minnock was murdered as who did the murdering. The victim’s girlfriend seems sincerely grief-stricken, and his quirky-but-brilliant partners at U-Play appear shocked as well. No one seemed to have a problem with the enthusiastic, high-spirited millionaire of course, success can attract jealousy, and gaming, like any business, has its fierce rivalries and dirty tricks—as Eve’s husband, Roarke, one of U-Play’s competitors, knows well. But Minnock was not naïve, and he knew how to fight back in the real world as well as the virtual one.

Eve and her team are about to enter the next level of police work, in a world where fantasy is the ultimate seduction—and the price of defeat is death.

Crack another case with Eve Dallas.

Once Again Another Great One!

This one was "Fantastical-ly" diffrent. Enter the world of E-GEEKS. Whoa I had trouble figuring out the killer on this one. I kept going back and forth with myself with 2 of the characters. I was glad it was the one I wanted it to be which was funny cause that was the same thing Peabody (Eve's partner) said.
Another great read the ending was very touching I love that Eve and Roarke's ralationship just grows with every story.
BIG thumbs up to Susan Erikson for the making the characters real and the great naration.

Enjoy! Happy Listening.

Okay Story

Any additional comments?

This was my first J. D. Robb and I expected something with a little more grit. The story line was okay but not as good as all the loyal reviewers made it out to be. I realy liked the characters, they had depth and I think for me it was because of the wonderful, wonderful narration. I believe Erickson was one of the better ones I've heard, the dialects were great. Bravo! I probably will listen to another J. D. book because I found the writing interesting just not this particular story.

Death by Gaming

Robb does a good job with plot, and taking you through the steps of discovering who wanted to kill the primary partner in a gaming company, and why the killer used the method to do so. From being unable to imagine anyone wanting to kill him, to walking you into the motivations driving a killer, Robb doesn’t miss a step.
Tight plotting, no missteps in characters, with Eve & Roarke in the center - what’s not to like?
Ericksen does a decent job of narration.

Good Narrator, strained premise

If you could sum up Fantasy in Death in three words, what would they be?

Interesting but thin.

Would you recommend Fantasy in Death to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend for the narrator, and if someone was a tech fan, or a fan of this author. But in general as a book, no.

What about Susan Ericksen’s performance did you like?

She was very engaging, had very distinct character voices with what seemed to be accurate accents.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Not really. I thought it was basically a decent book, but didn't move me.

Any additional comments?

I thought the premise was good...that virtual gaming could be an instrument killing in a possible murder. Really intriguing. I wanted to see how it ended. But like a lot of fiction set in the future, the technology hasn't been invented yet, and so the author takes a lot of liberties and allows the technology to have functionality that wasn't well explained and hard to understand. It was a little like how "Trekie" fans have to retroactively justify inconsistencies in plot points in the Star Trek series. It asks us to willfully suspend our disbelief a little too thinly. Things stopped making sense, and therefore I lost my interest in trying to figure out "who done it", or cared who did it. And the character that ended up doing it to me seemed very 2-dimensional in the end. He was a very intelligent character, but his alibi/reason for doing what he did was so illogical that it was hard to believe that he believed it would clear him of the crime. Loved the premise and most of the characters (especially the lead female detective), but in the end, nothing really added up. The narration was very good.

really good as usual

good audio length, story, etc. well worth my credit. While the narrator does an excellent Rourke voice, she misses on Peabody. Peabody sounds like she's talking through her nose and it does not do the well written character justice.

Still fun

Even after a number of books (this is book 30), it is still a great series. But to tell the truth, I found myself enjoying Eve and Peabody's banter more than the main mystery. There were places I couldn't help myself laughing. The main mystery was technologically interesting, although not as much as the other in Death books.

I have read them all

I love this series. It takes place just far enough ahead in the futrue where things are a bit different in the tech sense. More like what I really expect it to be. A futrue based CSI story with a great female lead detective who is human and kicks great butt with a flair for messing up and making it better. Love Eve's flaws and strength, and Roark is the perfect match for her.He is a bad boy with a heart of gold. What else would a billionaire have? They both have interesting things to bring to the table and the mystery of the crime is in there for wonderful entertainment value. the side characters are fun. JD Robb is a one of a kind author. But like any series everyone will choose their favorites. I have not been bored yet. I must say I do not like the novella's much. Not enough meat in them for a hungrey reader. This one was not a novella and a keeper. This in number 30 and I hope it keeps going for a long time to come.

Fantasy indeed

The ending to this book is wild. This book is even more futuristic than others in this series. Eve and Roarke barely escape with their lives. Summary covers basics of the book, so not rehashing the main part.
Susan does a great job as usual.

Game on

In the In Death world of Lt. Eve Dallas, NYPSD, killers are coming up with more and more ingenious ways to kill. This go round, Eve has to dig deep and really stretch her imagination to ferret out the killer. Bart Minnock, founder of the computer gaming giant U-Play, is discovered dead in a locked holo room, his head severed from his body. When no evidence of anyone else entering or leaving Bart's residence but him when he leaves work a bit early to head home, Eve and her team are totally baffled. This book is truly a mystery but Lt. Eve Dallas isn't the NYPSD's top murder cop for nothing. and she's determined to get to the bottom of this mystery that has everyone stumped, including her gorgeous and brilliant husband Roarke. This was a fantastic read and a highly recommended one. If you are a fan of the In Death series, you will not want to miss this one.
