Editorial reviews
In Extracurricular Activities, Book 2, narrated with a good-sport cheerful spirit by Gayle Hendrix, poor English professor, Alison Bergeron, just can’t catch a break. First, she’s accused of a murder she didn’t commit in Book 1, and now she’s dragged into another murder investigation in this sequel. Lucky for her, such grossly false and wild accusations do mean working with handsome homicide detective Bobby Crawford, her on again, off again flame once more. Alison loves Bobby - when Alison doesn’t hate Bobby. The listener might feel the same about this audiobook.
Publisher's summary
You'd think, now that she's off the hook for murder, Alison Bergeron, an English professor at a private college a stone’s throw up the Hudson from Manhattan, would be able to relax - but how can she with a wedding in the works?
Alison is happy for her best friend, Max. Really, she is. She loves Max, and the guy Max is marrying completely adores her. Even being in the wedding wouldn't be so bad, if it'd keep her from thinking about her off-again relationship with the married NYPD homicide detective Bobby Crawford. (Actually, if you want to be technical about it, he's separated, has been for years, but Alison is still getting over her own divorce and she's trying to make good decisions.) However, Bobby’s the best man, and that forces them into all kinds of awkward situations, like dancing cheek to cheek and sharing a bottle of champagne.
Then, when Alison's ex turns up dead, she’s dragged into another murder investigation. Convinced it's the handiwork of one of her former student's parents, a local Mob boss, and afraid for her life, she turns to Bobby for help, but threatening a Mob boss while he's fulfilling a vendetta may not be the best idea.
Romance, humor, and murder are sure to mix and mingle whenever Alison and Bobby link up in Extracurricular Activities, Maggie Barbieri's second charming mystery.

Story
Adams County, Alabama, is a friendly place where everyone knows each other—but not well enough, it seems. Someone among them is a serial killer who first romances, then stalks, kidnaps, and kills his victims. It's the first big case for sheriff Bernie Granger, and a chance to prove herself to her new partner, Memphis police detective Jim Norton. But this killer is uncannily smart. It's as if he knows what Bernie is thinking. And his next move is more than shocking—it's chillingly personal.

I can't say they didn't warn me. Right now, I realize: I probably should have listened. Because if there's anyone who has no business playing a sport that requires a helmet, pads, and a liability waiver, it's this girl. The same girl who once knocked herself out during a game of backyard baseball. I stepped up to the plate, pulled the bat back a little too far to swing, and clocked myself in the back of the skull. Boom. Lights Out Lucy. That's how I got my roller derby name. So yeah. Maybe I should have known better.

Story
It's been said that all great literature boils down to one of two stories—a man takes a journey, or a stranger comes to town. While mystery writers have been successfully using both approaches for generations, there's something undeniably alluring in the nature of a stranger: the uninvited guest, the unacquainted neighbor, the fish out of water. In the newest collection of stories by the Mystery Writers of America, each author weaves a fresh tale surrounding the eerie feeling that comes when a stranger enters our midst, featuring stories by prolific mystery writers.

Love the story, not so much the narration
This is a good story perhaps my new series of choice with one exception-the narrator. I found the narrator to be distracting. I would like more expression, change in tones and the pace. To me it sounds automated. I liked the story so I continued to the end and happy that I did. The ending was unexpected and worth hanging to the dnd of the book.

The narrator throws the whole thing off
I absolutely love this author, and I love the books. There is the right amount of humor, and the right amount of mystery and danger. At the same time that all of these things come together, mixed perfectly is the right amount of lightheartedness to the book. However, the narrator sounds like a grandmother. She does not sound anything like a 30 something woman. So what happens is when it’s romantic or it’s flirtatious or she’s reading as the male perspective bad. It really sounds like my grandmother trying to tell me a sexy story. It’s often cringe because she sounds so old.
