Commander William Monk of the River Police swears that Phillips will hang for this abomination. But the miscreant is as wily as he is monstrous, and his wealthy clients seem far beyond the reach of the law. Monk's attempt to bring about justice becomes the first electrifying episode in a nightmare that will test his courage and integrity.
However, reinforcements are on the way. Monk's wife, Hester, who runs a free clinic for abused women, draws a highly unusual guerrilla force to her husband's cause - a canny ratcatcher, a retired brothel keeper, a fearless street urchin, and a rebellious society lady. To one as criminally minded as Phillips, these folks are mere mosquitoes, to be sure. But as he will soon discover, some mosquitoes can have a deadly sting.
This gripping, terrifying story hurtles toward a denouement that will leave the reader breathless but cheering. Execution Dock is Anne Perry at her incomparable, magnificent best.

I have enjoyed many other Anne Perry stories, especially those read by Davina Porter. This one was marred by a terrible reading by David Colacci. I will make sure to stay away from any other books he narrates.
Another Author takes and ruins a character's previous persona. We are supposed to believe that Rathbone who has ALWAYS been Fiercely Loyal to both Monk and Hester NOT only attacks them but goes out of his way to humiliate them just so he can impress his father-in-law (a man he has NO need to impress) to represent an ANIMAL like Jericho Phillips. It makes you despise a character that has always been portrayed as an Honorable person.
Then there is Rathbone's wife Margaret--she has been loyal to Hester and quite frankly owes her own personal happiness to Hester. Now she is portrayed as self righteous B*ITCH!
The court scene where Rathbone rips Hester & Monk apart is ABSOLUTELY REPREHENSIBLE!!!!
What is WRONG with authors and their need to treat listeners like we are stupid. I have listened to all these books but this book is INSULTING!!!!!
And YES the Narrator SUCKS but that is old news.
Please bring back Davina Porter (the BEST female narrator ever) and the only reason I ever discovered this author.
No ! I like Anne perry books but he ruined it for me !
Either another Anne perry with a different narrator or a Charles Todd I like both authors very much
While the storyline may have been less than other books in the series, it never let one down or put one to sleep.
Anne Perry's ability to make one care for the characters fosters the need to find out what happens next.
While David Colacci's narration was acceptable in the four previous books in the series, it just didn't seem like he cared much in this one. It was difficult to tell the characters apart and particularly in this book, the general narration sounded like an inebriated Edward Fox.
No but I was glad to move on to another narrator.
Audible addicted love mystery, lately stuck on love story. Mother of 1 Labrador and 1 perfect man. Work way too hard, and so ready to be retired
I just did not like anything hardly about this book. The contents was unbearable.i fast forward most of f it and will not recommend it to any one not into hurting children.most of Anne books are great and great characters love Scott, heather and monk, hated raftbone and Martha in this one.these are just my opioin I've listen to most of the series not sure how you could bypass but🙈🙊hate this one.
I am listening my way through this series and enjoying all of them. I would love to see all of this series available through Audible and narrated by Davina Porter.
I really enjoyed this novel as the courtroom action was all at the beginning and the mystery and detective work came afterwards. The emotional tension in this book is one of the things that makes it stand out to me.
I have listened to other books by Anne Perry and narrated by another (a female - who did the first three in the William Monk series). I will NOT listen to another narrated by David Colacci. I will purchase print editions of other Anne Perry books in this series rather than listen to this narrator. He is absolutely horrible. I was able to suffer through it in order to find out the ending, but, my word, this guy is bad. He is terrible at the British accent and every word seems contrived. If you listened to the earlier books by the female narrator, you will HATE this guy.
I would like to reply to the first reviewer because I've already sung Perry's praises and have nothing to add to that. I find the Monk character fascinating because he represents that dark past that is only half-remembered. Because Anne Perry herself committed murder as a young girl, she has lived w it and I believe the Monk character grows from this.
I am a retired Court Reporter and I LOVE books. All kinds of books but my favorites are mysteries and period books. I like civil war books and some biographies.
I enjoyed it but I don't think that the Monk character is as good as Thomas Pitt.
