Publisher's Summary

New York book editor Maris Matherly-Reed knows a best seller when she sees one - even if it is just a tantalizing partial manuscript submitted by a writer identified only as P.M.E., with the return address of an obscure island off the Georgia coast. Maris is intrigued enough to search for him.

Her trip to Georgia to meet the mysterious author takes her to an eerie, ruined cotton plantation, where Maris finds Parker Evans, a man confined to a wheelchair who carefully hides his past. Coaxing his novel from him chaper by chapter, Maris becomes caught up in his tale of two friends who rent a boat with a young woman for a night of sex and drinking. Only one person will return from that trip.

Disturbed about her sexual attraction to Parker and worried about her marriage to author and her co-publisher Noah Reed, Maris returns to New York, where the delivery of Parker's newest chapters convince her they are more than fiction. She wonders how well she knows her husband and begins a harrowing search for a truth that ties back to a terrifying crime and a man who will use her, or anyone, to get his revenge.

    "Entertaining but..."

    Overall I enjoyed the story.

    **** Spoilers ****

I wish that Daniel had the smarts to not be alone with a guy who he didn't trust and about whom he had already received disconcerting report about. Also, Parker's good guy nature didn't jive with his actions. If he knew Noah to be a killer, he should have warned Maris (even before he fell in love with her). If he valued Celine's (Mary Catherine's) life so much how come he didn't care if Maris and Daniel were in mortal danger. Especially after he pretty much knew that Noah had killed Daniel. He still sent her back that morning with no warnings. This is very incongruous with the hard outer shell with a gooey angel center of the man who couldn't even get himself to kill his worst enemy image that the author was trying to project. Also, how could Maris be so stupid? She waited to talk to her father after finding out about Noah's true nature! And she is supposed to be a smart and sharp business woman. Come on. She was hurt emotionally and physically by the guy. Then she leaves her old dad with no indications of Noah's malevolence and runs of to Parker! That is very improbable and only reason it was done to add more 'spice' to the story. To tug at the reader's emotions when Daniel dies but it is completely unbelievable.

To me the author fails to keep Parker's, Maris and Daniel's character real. It's a shame. I would have wanted to read more from this author if it weren't for the above reasons.

When I clean, drive or exercise I listen to romance. The steamier the better but it must have a great story as well!

"Blew me out of the water!"

I was really surprised by how much I loved this story! I loved all of the twists and turns, I never saw them coming. I loved each character, they were so well developed that you felt attached to each one. The story may seem a little confusing at first because of the flashing back and forth through time. However, this really must be done so that you can form your own idea of what is happening, without being led by the characters. This is a must in my opinion! Defiantly a good read while in the car or doing monotonous work. You want to listen to this story when you can fully focus on it. I listened while doing the dishes after dinner, it always gave me the most vivid dreams.

    "Envy"

One of the first audio books I have not been able to "put down". The ability to hold one's interest as she weaves from "sub-story" to "sub-story" is phenomenal. Definitely a 5 star book.

    "Just Plain Fun!"

Envy is a thriller with nothing much to solve- Sandra Brown telegraphs every plot twist in the first three chapters, which makes her a genius because my interest never wavered while listening to this production. It's a character driven story. Each of the main characters is a cliche straight out of the Nora Robert's software kit- and yet....Envy is fast paced, utterly engaging and Brown is so talented, she makes these characters fresh, convincing and memorable.

I don't get it ....but I enjoyed every minute of Envy - and you will, too.

    "Great Book, Hard to Classify"
Where does Envy rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the better books I've read as a "one-off;" i.e. not part of a series.

What did you like best about this story?

When I chose it, I thought this book was in the mystery category. Half way through, I thought it was a "chick" book. While reading the sex scenes, I thought it was soft porn. In the end, I assigned it to the category of "literature." (Literature is my catchall for books I like and can't otherwise categorize.) Narration is excellent.

    Any additional comments?

I'll read more of Brown's work narrated by Slezak. I recommend this one as worth the time and credit/$.

    "Worst audiobook yet!"

This book is terrible. I have liked Sandra Brown in the past, but I will hesitate before wasting a credit on another book by her. The plot involves a book within a book and both of them are shallow, pointless and badly written. The narrator makes it even worse, if it's possible, by doing some very bad accents and making everyone sound really old and dim-witted, even during scenes that are meant to be sexy. I have been listening to audible books for about 3 years and this is the first one bad enough to prompt me to write a review.

"LOVED IT!!! Another Great Sandra Brown Novel"

I am a huge Sandra Brown fan and I have read almost all of her books and I am rarely disappointed. Envy did not let me down. The story within the story was great. You can kind of foreshadow what's to come, but there are lots of little twist that you don't see coming. And I have to say, being a huge fan of Audible.com that Victor Slezak is a great narrator. He has narrated several of Ms. Brown's books and the way he can switch accents and voices makes you believe there are different people talking and takes you inside the book.
I saw some of the bad reviews so I was afraid Ms. Brown might let me down this time, but apparently those people were looking for a different kind of book. I don't like Sci-Fi so I know I'm not going to go buy a Sci-Fi novel. Sandra Brown writes Romance and Suspence novels, if you don't like those types of novels, this isn't for you. So don't write a bad review because you purchased a novel that you won't like to begin with. When you read Ann Rice, expect bloody vampire scenes and don't be offended when you read them. When you read Sandra Brown or Joan Collins, expect sex scenes and if that offends you, then don't read them. And certainly don't give them bad reviews because you wasted your money buying a novel that wasn't you're cup of tea in the first place. Ms. Brown, ENVY, was perfection as always!

    "Good Stuff!"

Another great book by Sandra Brown. Great plot, nice twists, etc. It was especially intriguing because you get to read a book within a book. I could hardly turn it off. It has a little bit of everything (love, lust, hate, mystery, revenge)so it is appealing to different types of readers. Also, the narrator is easy to listen to. Nothing ruins a good book worse than a boring narrator :(

    "GET THIS BOOK!!!!"

I have read and listened to quite a few books from all kinds of genere's. This is absolustely one of if not the best book I have ever listened too. I'm afraid to get anything else by sandra brown (or almost anyone else now) cause I don't know how she (or anyone else) could EVER top this book. It grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go. Even till the end. I honestly can say that I DID NOT WANT THIS BOOK TO END. I can also actually say that I loved this book. And I have never said that before about a book. If you are debating on downloading this book, DON'T!!! It will surely be one of the best you ever listen to. This is my first Sandra Brown book, and I have to say, she is at the top of my favorite author list already!!! Now, YOU QUIT READING THESE REVIEWS AND GO DOWNLOAD THIS BOOK!!!
