"Superior crime fiction, as suspenseful as it is psychologically acute." (Booklist)
"Smooth prose and plausible characters, even the secondary figures, elevate this several notches above the standard cop vs. serial-killer thriller." (Publishers Weekly)
I have listened to over 250 books in the last 10 years. I tend to listen to certain authors and try to read all their books. I listen while exercising and driving which makes the time past enjoyable.
For an audio book to be enjoyable and worth the read there must be two components. First the story must be well written and the plot engaging. Second it must be well read. In Echo Park both components are excellent. Both the dialog and the characterization of Bosch are well maintained throughout the book. It is as good as any of his other books, which I have either read or listened to all of his books.
This book was well worth the wait, it has all of the best of Harry Bosch. This had twists and turns that were completely unexpected and kept you on the edge until the last minute. I love all of Michael Connelly's books and this was just as close to perfect as they come. Harry is a great, flawed character that is so real you believe everything that happens to him and end up wishing for more.
There is nobody, and I mean nobody who writes this genre better than Connelly. He doesn't muck up Bosch's life with unrealistic actions or relationships. I thought he was coming too close to it with Walling, but thankfully he let Bosch be who he really is...a flawed man, an honorable yet somewhat unhonorable cop, and a great detective. I was glad it was nearly pure storyline, without the ex-wife and daughter present as well. I don't want to see Connelly take Bosch down the Lucas Davenport route.
The story is one that at the beginning just eats at a mother (me) - a child killed and the killer never found. One could absorb the frustration Bosch had felt throughout the long years of the investigation. The emotional tragedy he felt. It was compelling.
Connelly is the best of anyone at capturing the essence of personalities of the different policemen who deal with Harry. Nakamura was a photograph to me by the time Connelly gets through with him. All the characters are sparingly, yet very effectively drawn. I love that about Connelly.
This is a really, really, really good book. I would have given it 4-1/2 stars because I found the lead-up to the end just a tad overdone and a bit unbelievable maybe (the restroom scene), but I was fascinated with this book the entire time I was listening.
I can't wait to meet Bosch again.
I love all genres of books. However, when I listen to audio books as I clean, garden, drive they are better with a lot of heat!
This is my 5th or 6th Michael Connelly book. I love the stories: they are intriguing and tense, and keep the listeners interest. I enjoyed the narration and the book very much
From first page to last, a highly gripping mystery of the highest order. Well written, well read, just a total pleasure.
I am a blessed man!
You will never regret listening to one of Connelly's Harry Bosch novels. The story is great, Bosch is one of the great modern detective characters I've ever encountered.
If it had not been for the over-ennunciating narrator, I would have given this book a 5-Star Rating. Having read Michael Connelly's so-so "Lincoln Lawyer", I was very pleasantly surprisedby the seat-of-your pants storyline of "Echo Park." If you are looking for a mystery-thriller that it diffiult to put down, try this book...despite the annoying narrator.
Harry Bosch at his best. Out of all my listens to Michael Connelly, I found this to be his best work. I enjoyed from the beginning to end. If you have read or heard his other Harry Bosch novels, you will like that many of the characters return.
A few loose ends, but I promise that you will not want to turn this off.
I almost quit listening because of the flat, halting tone of the narrator. He doesn't "perform" the story but just reads it in a flat , monotone voice and halts or pauses in odd places. But I stayed with it and really did enjoy the story itself.
Michael Connelly is a terrific writer. His books are always readable, meticulously plotted, with well drawn and believable characters - particularly the main man, Harry Bosch - and real page turners. Echo Park is right up with the best of his work in all these respects. The narration is excellent too adding greatly to the pleasure of the book. Strongly recommended.
"Well written with a good story, but super cheesy"
I have never read any other Micheal Connelly Books but i like a good detective story. This one starts off well and becomes addictive quickly, the story is well written, flows smoothly and has a good twist in the end. The only point that really lets it down is the large amount of cliches you would find in a Gene Hackman film.
Bosch is an ex 'nam' solider whose mother was murdered thus he becomes a detective (and solves his own mothers case!), there are lots of cringe-worthy 'she's my partner god-dammit' scenes and 'the badge is what i live for' moments. If you can put up with this then it is a good book though these parts literally made me laugh out loud. One other thing is that the reader adopts a really odd voice for Bosch's friend Rachel, this was testing my patience towards the end. None of this made me stop listening however, so it really isn't so bad. I'd recommend it.
Michael Connelly's best to date - he just gets better with every book. Full of twists & suspense from the first 'page' until the 'last'. I listened to it in one go - couldn't 'put it down'. Brilliant. And the reading is unbelievable.
The best Connellys book i have ever read.Mr Connelly does it again.Griping story with twists and turns.Bosh character is in my view the best of all.
This is an excellent thriller, well written and well read. The plot had enough twists to keep my interest to the end. I have listened to several Michael Connelly novels and I have enjoyed them all. They have pace, believable characters and good plots. If you like thrillers that have good plots and well drawn characters then you should enjoy this.
