Publisher's summary

In 1993, Marie Gesto disappeared after walking out of a supermarket. Harry Bosch worked the case but couldn't crack it, and the 22-year-old was never found. Now, more than a decade later, with the Gesto file still on his desk, Bosch gets a call from the district attorney. A man accused of two heinous murders is willing to come clean about several others, including the killing of Marie Gesto.

Taking the confession of the man he has sought and hated for 13 years is bad enough. Discovering that he missed a clue back in 1993 that could have stopped nine other murders may just be the straw that breaks Harry Bosch.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Critic reviews

"Superior crime fiction, as suspenseful as it is psychologically acute." (Booklist)

"Smooth prose and plausible characters, even the secondary figures, elevate this several notches above the standard cop vs. serial-killer thriller." (Publishers Weekly)

The Story was Excellent.

All of Michael Connelly’s books are interestingly written, and the characters are easy to keep up with and follow through out the book. I believe I have listened to all of his books and anciently waiting for his next. Personally I enjoyed his legal stories the most.

Great book!

Loves the whole book. I thought it was strange that the book continued at what I assumed was the end but it’s a great ending.

Connelly is the best of the best

There is nobody, and I mean nobody who writes this genre better than Connelly. He doesn't muck up Bosch's life with unrealistic actions or relationships. I thought he was coming too close to it with Walling, but thankfully he let Bosch be who he really is...a flawed man, an honorable yet somewhat unhonorable cop, and a great detective. I was glad it was nearly pure storyline, without the ex-wife and daughter present as well. I don't want to see Connelly take Bosch down the Lucas Davenport route.

The story is one that at the beginning just eats at a mother (me) - a child killed and the killer never found. One could absorb the frustration Bosch had felt throughout the long years of the investigation. The emotional tragedy he felt. It was compelling.

Connelly is the best of anyone at capturing the essence of personalities of the different policemen who deal with Harry. Nakamura was a photograph to me by the time Connelly gets through with him. All the characters are sparingly, yet very effectively drawn. I love that about Connelly.

This is a really, really, really good book. I would have given it 4-1/2 stars because I found the lead-up to the end just a tad overdone and a bit unbelievable maybe (the restroom scene), but I was fascinated with this book the entire time I was listening.

I can't wait to meet Bosch again.

Great book, don't be put off

I’m very surprised by the negative reviews listed for this book. I thought it was one of the best audio books I have ever listened to. It has a fantastic twisting plot, classic characters and a great narrator in Len Cariou who has a wonderful deep voice that perfectly suits Harry Bosch. I’m glad I didn’t read these reviews before I downloaded it as it would have put me off a great book.

Len Cariou is a great narrator.

I love narration by Dick Hill and Len Carriou. Some of the narrators in between were nowhere near as good.

Supsenseful and intriguing

A great thriller that maintains the suspense right up until the very end. And when you think you have it figured out, there are a few more turns. Great book!

One of the best

May be the best Bosch story. Still enjoying the added music, too. Though a lot different in execution, the Bosch Amazon program this story inspired was also well done.

Love the Bosch Series

As always I am entertained by this series. Had trouble with the narration in this book. The narrator lowered his voice whispered the female characters. Difficult to hear and distractingfrom the story, had to replay sections, seemed like a odd choice from the narrator. Also I am spoiled by Titus Weever playing Bosch in the TV series so its hard to vision the character with another voice.
