Echo Burning | [Lee Child]

Echo Burning

Reacher is hitching through the heat of West Texas and getting desperate for a ride. The last thing he's worried about is exactly who picks him up.

She's called Carmen. She's a good-looking young woman, she has a beautiful little girl...and she has married into the wrong family. They're called the Greers. They're a bitter and miserly clan, and they've made her life a living hell. Worse, her monster of a husband is soon due out of prison. So she needs protection, and she needs it now.

Lawyers can't help. Cops can't be trusted. So Reacher goes home with her to the lonely ranch where nothing is as it seems, and where evil swirls around them like dust in a storm. Within days, Carmen's husband is dead - and simmering secrets send Echo, Texas, up in flames.

Reading allows me to travel through time, to visit the world's unique and stunning places, to become somebody I am not... It is glorious.

    "Weak, whiny women."
Would you ever listen to anything by Lee Child again?

Of course. I really like Jack. And Dick Hill's interpretation of Jack is spot on. Unfortunately the only female that I liked in this book was the one who was only six! She was more tenacious, stronger, funnier and more likable than any of the others. I really hope the female characters become more than cardboard cutouts of real, vivacious and interesting women. So far they are mostly sex partners who will never be revisited after the novel in which they are featured. And in this book they were even less likable than those others.

What didn’t you like about Dick Hill’s performance?

The female characters voices were more child-like than that of the child.

    "A Little Ho-Hum"

I read/listen extensively. This is my third Reacher book. I was able to figure it all out about 2/3 through. Not a good thing. I need more complexity without gimmicks (Child did not employ these, thank goodness).

"If you're hooked on Jack Reacher..."
    Any additional comments?

…this is the perfect way to end your addiction; if you've read two or three Reacher books by the time you get to this one, you'll realize that the plot is virtually the same, only with a damsel in distress who is incredibly difficult to sympathize with. Reacher comes across as an ignorant moron who decides to be a knight in shining armor for a woman he barely knows and is even suspicious of. Don't waste your time.

"More twists and turns than a cork screw!"
Would you consider the audio edition of Echo Burning to be better than the print version?

Yes. The audio version is easier on the ears than the eyes. I think I suffer from a new addiction called Audible Dot Com and may need counseling. Echo burning has you going from the very beginning. Dick Hill does a great job.

What did you like best about this story?

This story is impossible to figure out. Every time I thought I knew something, I didn't. Reacher is the only fictional character who rides off into the sunset by hitchhiking! This story has some nasty characters who get their just desserts in the deserts or is it deserts in the desserts...who knows? The grit was palpable.

What does Dick Hill bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

This is a tough one. When I read the book I don't hear Dick Hill in my head? Hill plays the role.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Tag line? Hmmm.... The sound of bones crunching....?

    Any additional comments?

I will wait a month or two and listen to this again.

    "Elitist naive storyline."

Elitist naive storyline. Badly researched and horribly inaccurate firearms knowledge. Have read many Lee Child books and enjoy most of them. This book will probably end my relationship with Mr. Childs.

    "Not the Jack we Love"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I felt the first 4 hours was a waste of time and could have been summed up in half the time. When the story really began to pick up it become predictable especially since Jack had all the answers. I love the series so this will not stop me from continuing to love the series but this is the proverbial bump in the road. Keep listening and reading!

What was most disappointing about Lee Child’s story?

Very slow beginning and not sticking with the true Jack.

What three words best describe Dick Hill’s performance?

    I Love Dick Hill period.

"The whole premise of this book is illogical."
What disappointed you about Echo Burning?

What happened to the narrator of the last 4 books?
The narrator go from loud talking to a whisper at the end of every sentence.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Dick Hill?

    The previous narrator.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment.

    Any additional comments?

    Cant even finish the book.

    "He's lying, she's lying, everybody's lying."

Great story. Less violent than the other's I've read so far. I totally enjoyed this. And who's lying? It could've gone either way. So much entwined in this complicated plot, but still easy to follow. I'm glad I stuck with the series. Definitely a good read if you like books that suck you in and you can't put them down. And I love the narrator. He has a very pleasant reading voice.

"A Great Mystery Improves the Story"

I'm usually highly critical of Lee Child because he tends to write about an area of life that I work in. He usually fails to grasp the nuances of law enforcement, but he seems to have done his homework this time around and hits the nail right on the head with this one. That being said, the only characters that are 100% believable in this outing of Jack Reacher is the law enforcement and the hit men. I had a really hard time finding the other characters believable and it hurt the story. However he made up for it in giving us a great mystery plot. So a story that should have gotten a 3 star rating gets a 4, and an ok book becomes an interesting one.

Dick Hill does a fantastic job as Jack Reacher and does this work justice. I really wish that all of the Jack Reacher books on Audible were read by Dick Hill, because he truly is the voice of Jack Reacher.
