Audible Editor Reviews

Boasting a cast of narrators including Golden Earphones recipient Gabrielle de Cuir and Golden Voice awardee Stefan Rudnicki, this unique audiobook features each narrator taking on a different character and performing chapters from their point of view. Listeners will be electrified by their performance of this story where a mysterious little boy who begins appearing in an artist's paintings, even though the artist has never actually seen him; a partially-blind agoraphobic is expelled from his apartment by a strange entity; a widower begins to have nightmares that his long-missing son is still alive and in danger; and a young runaway realizes his companion is actually a malevolent presence. The narrators keep up an urgent pace, and link these four stories together seamlessly to an unpredictable end.

    "So Worth a Credit!!!"

I was not expecting to like this novel nearly as much as I did. As I have admitted before, I am an extremely picky reader and have to be engaged from the first page of a book until the last. "Drawn" kept me interested and creeped out from the beginning until the end. This paranormal listen has an original storyline that weaves in and out of four people's lives, and neatly comes together at the end. It reminds me of Koontz and King's earlier novels. The narration was outstanding with the one exception. The female character's narration had a voice that was a cross between whining and sexual frustration or something, ... I don't know what the hell was going on there. The other performances, fortunately, made up for it. Overall this book is definately worth a credit, and worth your time.

    "Great narration, weak story"
Would you listen to Drawn again? Why?

No, although the narration was compelling, the story itself was not worth another listen.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I love supernatural thrillers, but the mechanism that tied this one together was very far off, and didn't make any sense. Suspension of disbelief only goes so far.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

With maybe one exception, all of the narrators are top notch, embodied their individual characters well, and kept me listening.

    "could not un plug"
Would you consider the audio edition of Drawn to be better than the print version?

only because of all the different narrators.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved all of it. this is the sort of book that makes you think about it for days after..

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

the reason I chose this book is because of christen rummel, I'm so glad I gave it a go all the other narrators were great..

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

you can run but you can't hide

    Any additional comments?

this book is just the right amount of scary. its scary real life scary and paranormal scary. it makes you think about how one action can change your life and about the imprint you can leave on someone even if your not aware of it.

    "Another Great Hankins Book"

Completely different from Brothers & Bones, his first book I'd read (listened to) and this one was fabulous also! Different narrators added to it rather than distracting from the story as can happen in some audio books. I have already purchased the third book that I know of that Hankins has written and will be listening soon!

"I have heard this story before"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Probably not. It is like so many stories to come out of occupied countries of the 1930s-40s. Basically, it took up too much of my time--would have been interesting as an article in Time or chapter in a book, but I have heard this basic story before now, with a different cast of characters. There is little to no suspense .

What other book might you compare Drawn to and why?

From the opposite side of the box," Diary of Anne Frank"

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

Good modulation--more than one speaker, which I liked, giving variety and a bit more believability.

Could you see Drawn being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Possibly--with stars like Meryl Streep, and a, If handled correctly, this could have been interesting with a good director, such as George Lukas, etc.

    Any additional comments?

I do not with to deny the courage and sacrifice show in this book, but, to me, it just was the same as so many accounts of the period.

    "Shame about narration!"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I bought this in a 2 books for 1 credit offer-and cannot decide if I regret it.The story,is pretty intriguing, although it does get off to a slow start.I am a third of the way through and half of me wants to quit and ask for a refund.Multiple narrators and they are all grating on my ears to the point of giving me a headache.3 hours in has got me wondering what is going to happen,so I will probably finish it-1 chapter at a time,in between other books. It may take a while!

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Only a third of way in so cannot say yet.

Would you be willing to try another one of the narrators’s performances?

Not if I can help it!

Could you see Drawn being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

Would probably work well on screen-from what I have heard so far.Not sure about who stars could be.

    Any additional comments?

I will finish this -maybe put it on quietly in bed and let it play in the dark.

    "Not good."
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure who would enjoy the book, someone who wouldn't notice the at times terrible writing?

What was most disappointing about James Hankins’s story?

It was slow, the characters were annoying.

Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrators?

    No.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Exasperation.

    Any additional comments?

The female narrator had THE MOST annoying breathy voice.

"Good little story with a unique reading style"
Where does Drawn rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Not the best, but entertaining and ranked higher than some of the more well known books.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Didn't have one, but prefered Boone. Just had more story to his character

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

That there were 5 narrators portraying each main character in the story. I actually liked this idea as I like audio dramas and this added to the overall feel of the story. It also definitely helped because it would sometimes switch quickly between characters and you knew which you were listening about this way much easier.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, but I never do. I prefer good long books that I can pick up anytime. This one had moments where I couldn't stop and had to find ways to listen longer. But no it's not so great you can't put it down.

    Any additional comments?

Good story overall, fun read. Not everyone will be happy with the resolution and overall ending, but no one ever is.

    "A bit scary for me"

I have an embarrassing secret, I'm a bit of a scaredy cat when it comes to the paranormal so this book was a little difficult to listen to alone at night and at points I did find myself turning it off even though I really wanted to know what would happen next my nerves couldn't take it . However during the light of day I did enjoy it. I liked the different characters and there story's but I never found myself bonding with any of them. Not my favourite audio book so far but not a bad listen.
